Have you written Google ads that haven’t produced the results that you wanted?
Many of us have received Google Adwords credit either from their hosting company or from Google directly. Often times, we take that amount, create an ad in less than a few minutes and cross our fingers. Sure, you might get lucky but the reality is that writing really effective ads take years of practice. There’s a reason why people go to school for marketing and hone their skills for many years.
I believe in Pareto’s Law, which many of you know as the 80/20 rule. In this example, I believe I can get you 80% of the way to writing effective Google ads in 20% of the time. In the long run, to be really good (practicing and learning that remaining 20%), it will take time and a lot of trial and error.
So let’s focus on starting that 80% right now.
The secret to writing better ads immediately
The biggest problem with many untrained marketers is that they fail to place themselves into the shoes of the target audience. Once you determine the keywords you want your ad, before you even start writing, take a moment to wear the hat of your target. Literally, I want you to “become” that person.
Let’s say you have a website that sells natural soaps. You decide that the keywords you’d want this particular ad to appear for is ‘goat milk soap’. So when someone types ‘goat milk soap’, what do you think they are looking for?
So if you are thinking like the target, are you looking to buy it or make it? Do you want to learn about its benefits or adverse reactions?
You decide that you are typically looking to learn about benefits and then acquire the product. Now what type of ad would draw you in?

10 reasons people switch to
look and feel healthier and younger!
If you typed ‘goat milk soap’ would that ad make you want to click it? If not, start tweaking. Keep going until you can answer with a definitive yes. Before you butcher the ad, I have several business degrees and have many years of marketing under my belt and I still won’t claim that my first pass at an ad for goat milk soap is perfect.
However, even if you think you have the perfect ad, you must monitor the ad and fine tune it. But at least now you have a great starting point to work from!
Those of you who have played with Google ads, what are some ads that have worked for you?

Hi Gabe,
I haven’t placing Adword Ads yet but I think that what you have to say here works wonderfully well for landing of squeeze pages as well. Maybe a bit more content than adwords, but the same principle applies.
Thank you for another great post!

Thanks, Valentina. Obviously this works for almost any ad. Many untrained marketers are thinking solely about themselves when writing ads and not really seeing how it benefits the target audience.
oops…. I guess that is why you have a “preview” option so that commentors can catch mistakes before pushing the “say it” button …
will preview rather than review in the future

In order to create such ads you need to know your exact target group.
True but don’t you think that there’s an inherent problem if someone actually can’t identify their target audience?

I think any seasoned article marketer will tell us the importance of including key words in our title.
Amazing how often the simplest things are the biggest secrets. Put yourself in the buyers mind should be common sense, yet so largely overlooked.

You’re right. People tend to naturally write ads that benefit the writer and not the reader.
I’ve never used Adwords, but Google just gave me $100 credit.

In any case, very timely article. Putting yourself in the reader’s shoes is good advice for just about anything.

One of the ways I write better ads is to go and see what my competition are doing… I find by doing that I always find a bunch of ideas I can use – sometimes I do this in other niches as well so im not blatently stealing other peoples ideas…

I think writing is a better Ad comes gradually.. by searching and reading docs for it…
Gabe thanks! I have been away from the computer trying to get my greenhouse’s up and running these past couple of weeks. I not only appreciate this post, but thanks for using goats milk as the example. I feel like I am gradually coming out of the information overload stage and can really start applying such valuable information such as this, to use. I tried google adds almost a year ago, back when I really hadn’t a clue what I was doing. I think its time to fool around with putting together a few adds. Thanks a million!
I wanted to be able to use an example that’s different from my niche. So I picked one for you! Hope you can use it in some way.

I completely agree with your idea of putting yourself in the ad reader’s mindset.
That being said, if you use the dynamic keyword features you could do the same for multiple keywords. Alternative ly, if your market is segmented, then you can optimize even further by putting yourself in the mind of each type of person in your target audience, thereby creating multiple ads for each keyword.

Unless you’re in the top 25k Alexa, you’re not going to earn much in that niche.
I need to really market my client’s website, but he does not want to use Google Ad-words. He also wants to do so relatively cheaply. What are my options?
I have a food website that have100 visitors in a day.Currently I am earning from various advertising which is very hard to manage.
I want to switch to Google adsesne.how much can I earned from Google adsense?
If you have around 100 visitors a day, I’d have to say you’ll definitely gain some earning, but it’s not really all about traffic, it also matters how you integrate your adsense within your pages and content. I’d advice you to read on some articles about ‘integrating adsense inside your page/content’ and I’m sure you’ll have satisfying results
