Wow, WordPress 2.8.5 was released only three short weeks ago. So what’s the deal?

Well, it looks like just another “recommended” security release that addresses two issues:

  1. Security problem for logged in users with posting privileges. If you are the only author and/or really trust all other authors, this doesn’t really affect you.
  2. Problem with sanitizing uploaded file names in Apache configurations. If you don’t have Apache, this doesn’t affect you either. If you’re not sure, then I would upgrade just in case.

That means most WordPress users are not impacted and can forgo this release. I, personally, prefer to be on the latest version regardless. If you forge ahead and upgrade like I did, you should back up your WP files and database (even though this release shouldn’t affect the database at all).

Sadly, still no news on the actual release date on WordPress 2.9. As I mentioned before, I still hope that it arrives in late November or early December.
