As long as the destination is relevant, there’s virtually no harm in supplying outbound links for visitors.

Back in Olden Days… never mind… I’ve written about it before.

I’m going to update a post of mine from June 27 2009 to mention this article, which is very good by the way.

And the short, right answer is: never fear doing anything which helps your readers.

Good point, Gabe, “Outbound links take people away from their site”
Recall “good, old time” when forums were almost the only place where people exchange the ideas.
I remember one forum where you have to make at least 20 posts in order to place your signature. You have to post at least 50 posts in order to place one link. I run away from this forum, never come back.
I don’t think Outbound links take people away. Good example to share with you.
One of my friends runs Classifieds site http://www.jeanza.com where you can place as many links as you like. Even if you are competitor. Result – Huge popularity.
The other example kijiji.com – where you have to pay for each link. Result – people run away from such sites.

I think in general, as long as you don’t fear putting them on your site, you’re fine. I try to be as organic as possible when it comes to writing my posts so when an outbound link is relevant, I pop it in. You’ll find a good portion of them laced throughout my previous posts.
