Remember when you first signed up for Twitter and started following people? Eventually you realize that one method to build a following is to follow as many people as possible hoping that they’ll follow you back. In theory, that works but it doesn’t last forever.
Twitter stops you at 2000
Once you hit 2000 followers, you can’t follow anymore unless you have an actual following. So on day one, if you somehow found 2000 to follow, you can still have 0 followers. But in order to follow the 2001st person, you’ll need 1820 followers.
Why? That’s because once you reach the magic 2000, there’s a 10% rule to prevent mitigate spamming. So if you have 2000 followers, you can following up to 2200 people. If you have 4000 followers, you can follow up to 4400 people. Get it? The more followers you have, the more of a “buffer” Twitter will give you.
You can have as many sheep as you want
Although there is a limitation on how many people you follow, Twitter lets you have as many followers as you want. You can follow nobody but have 50,000 followers. That’s how celebs like Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, and Ellen DeGeneres all have over 3 million followers as of this writing.
Use tools to mass follow and mass unfollow
Unless you are a celebrity or have some type of real following, you obviously will have to play the follow-me-and-I’ll-follow-you-back game. Doing it manually will only take you so far. Therefore, people use tools like TwitterFollower and Buzzom and TweetDeck and GreaseMonkey, just to name a few. (I’ll do a Twitter tool review at a later date.)
When I say “mass follow” I don’t mean you have to follow everyone. I’m simply saying that you’ll have the ability to access others in a network and you can be still be selective.
Building your followers has benefits
There are many reasons to increase your following but if you’re a blogger, that should be reason enough. Ever since I actually made the effort to build a following, my traffic has increased. In fact, Twitter is now my top referral, with only direct traffic and organic searches exceeding it as overall traffic sources.
Additionally, you can get paid! As I mentioned in a previous article about Sponsored Tweets, you can get paid for sending out tweets! How long do you think it takes to fire off a tweet? There’s nothing like making a few bucks by just making a single click. If you’re going to sign up, please don’t forget who sent you there (<— not so subtle self-plug).
Long-term Twitter decision
You’ll quickly realize that following several thousand people will create a lot of noise. It’ll be non-stop shouting.
What you can do at that point is start unfollowing. You can just look through the names and pictures and you can pretty much tell which followers add no real value to you at all, other than boosting your Twitter stats.
If your ego allows it, feel free to unfollow everyone. Sure, you’ll lose some followers in the process but your ratio (one of the things that some sponsors look at) will be much better. That’s when you know you’ve really made it as a shepherd!

I’m pretty sure my top source of traffic is coming from comments.
I’ve been really diligent the last couple of months to comment effectively. That is, actually read the articles, figure out if anything is actionable, figure out if I can contribute anything meaningful.
My limited experience with twitter is that it seems similar. To me it’s more like IRC with only one channel (!) but most of the people on twitter haven’t heard of IRC… which is an important difference! In any case, figure out what your audience is, and how to contribute. I’ve unfollowed several people who don’t understand I’m not in their audience.

It’s possible if I added up all the comment referrals, they may exceed my Twitter referral.
That said, I don’t think Twitter should be discounted when it comes to bringing in traffic. I believe it’s perfectly OK to have folks who are not in your niche but are still interested in your articles and such.
Anyway, using Twitter is just one way to play the game. I don’t have to love it, it just has to love me.
I’m still trying to figure out how to utilize Twitter to help me make money. This post helps but I still need to get more followers!!!
Hmm. Twitter is nice although its insanely rare to get traffic from twitter. Maybe its because I just can’t pass the 90 followers mark.
Its a nice tool though to keep in touch with celebrities.

This is a great post. I keep on wondering to myself if there are other ways to develop a follower base without actually following other people and being a non-celebrity like myself.
Every time I write a blog I make sure to announce it on Twitter. This actually seems to generate a little bit of incoming traffic to my website and it has also generated a marginal increase in my followers.
I think that the more controversial the title’s of your Twitter posts are, the more followers you will get.
I focus purely on content and building relationships on twitter these days. In the beginning I played “the race to 2000 game” too. But as I’ve become a better tweeter I see that you’ll get the most out of twitter by ignoring the # of followers and paying attention to every possible follower that I can. It’s too easy to get caught up in the logic/numbers game so that spamming techniques are used. I know, I’ve been there. Marketing is a relationships game. The more content I provide AND the more friends that I make, the more I’m trusted. The more trust, the more opportunities.
New Twitter users are always fond of having as many follower as possible and the regular tactic is to bulk follow and wait others follow back. IMHO, this tactic s*cks and may ruin our online presences as well as eat up our times. For me, spend more time find good stuff to tweet is always the best way to build authority on Twitter. And forget the number of follower, it’s much more better to count the number of RT we get.

Everyone has their opinions about how fast and how targeted they want to build their Twitter following. I find that many people change gears at some point; those who will follow anyone may become more selective later and vice versa.
Hi Gabe, This is one of the best post about Twitter and its limits. You have covered some of the points which are new for me and I would say “Thanks”.

I am yet to see the full potential of Twitter. I have a similar number of followers as yourself but it’s difficult to gauge whether the traffic that comes from Twitter is worth the amount of work to get those followers.
I keep telling myself that I will wait until I hit 10,000 followers before I decide whether it is worth it or not.
