Today we have a special guest, Dee, who lists some common boo-boos in blogging.
As it stands, there isn’t really any concrete way of knowing exactly how many amateur arm chair writers and business blogs fail on a daily basis, but suffice to say the answer would not be a small number. One of the biggest problems blogs face in the modern way of things is that although they have potential to be hugely powerful, there are just so many of them that the competition is beyond immense. With this in mind, the following is a brief rundown of a few of the most common reasons for blog failures that can be taken as sure-fire ways of killing a blog in a spectacular style:
1 – Lack of Devotion
It really make little to no difference what the subject of the blog is or its overall purpose, the necessary amount of devotion and focus is required to make the blog a success. The biggest cause of all blog failing by far is the way in which many owners feel they are doing a good job with theirs, but are in fact neglecting them somewhat. Consider how many hours per day are actually being devoted to the blog and evaluate whether this is really enough.
2 – Doing it Alone
Taking the reigns and getting into the blog business along can seem a hugely appealing prospect, with full control over the proceedings and 100% of all gains and rewards to follow. However, doing so can be a huge mistake if the subject matter of the blog is one where time-consuming research is needed or other complexities abound. Setting standards too high at the beginning of a new blog can often see the end result come a cropper without a little help from the right sources – so consider involvement.
3 – Forgetting the Audience
It is important to question from time to time exactly whom the blog appeals to and the size of the niche audience out there. More often than not, the reason a blog struggles is because there simply are not enough interested people out there – which is of course something that nobody can put right. If this appears to be the case, consider switching niches to one that will see interest flooding in.
4 – Pure Material Gain
Of course, it goes without saying that the primary driving force behind the majority of blogs started these days is the cold hard cash they can bring in, but if this is the one and only reason behind the blog then the likelihood of it standing the test of time is minimal. There simply must be a degree of passion and drive behind the endeavour to prevent the whole thing becoming a time-consuming and laborious chore.
5 – Following Suit
Whenever something big happens in the industry or the niche that is the subject of the blog, it can be hugely tempting to re-print the details, but it may be best to exercise restraint. The simple fact of the matter here is that nobody is really going to want to read what they may have already read a dozen times elsewhere, therefore if there is nothing more to be said and nothing to add to the information available, perhaps leave it out.
6 – Ignoring Analytics
One of the most wonderful things about the Internet is the way in which business, site and blog owners can track the activities of their readers right down to the very last one – which makes it all the more surprising that millions still never use the software available to do so! Simply by taking a regular look at the analytics available online, it is simple to see exactly what people are searching for, how many of them are searching for it and what seems to be dwindling in popularity. The only way to get by in business is to give the people what they want and with such software around, it really could not be easier these days.

Great tips – an overlap of your point 6 is to research before you publish and have SEO in mind. See what people are searching for and what you can realistically rank for. Then create great content to fill the void. Someone may love to write about making money online but it’s a niche that’s already saturated enough. Research and find an angle that you can target…

This article really has a good tip, and that is 2. Don’t Do it Alone.
I used to try and run our company blog by myself, and it just accumulated stress and not readers. Its when I opened the door to guest bloggers for a small discount on an in-store purchase that our visits and conversions from blog articles really took off!
There are some great tips here but I really like your comment about opening the door to guest bloggers. I like the idea of further engaging your customers and crowdsourcing content. You’ve both given me something to think about, cheers.
Point number 6 is the mistake I have been doing! Thanks for this helpful share.

Great tips, escpecially #6 on analytics. It’s amazing how many folks you meet who have been running websites for years and don’t understand how to properly use this tool. For those trying to find the best software to use, Google Analytics is incredibly powerful, especially considering that it’s free. For real-time results and individual visitor tracking, try Statcounter or Clicky.
Hey,
I agree with all what you said but however as a passionate blogger I don’t feel that one should not write a blog alone. Blogging and writing is something that is recognized when done through passion.
But yeah as a marketer point of view all your post is agreeable.
Very insightful points, but I would have really liked for you to expound further on #2. Maybe examples of how one can/should seek emotional support from friends & family; guidance from mentors & associates (e.g., other webmasters); learning help from books, videos, & one’s audience/readership; business support from outsourcing & ancillary services, etc.

I probably am guilty of ignoring analytics… but I have always been weary of services like Klout and other things to truly measure your social media impact.
I wager that only a well-written URL tracked in Google Analytics is the only real way to see the success of a post. Especially if you drop the client into the beginning of your goal funnel.

Well, in my opinion, the biggest mistake a beginner makes is choosing a niche and making copy of existing contents. People should give a try to the writer sitting inside them. Most of the times we don’t notice the power of self writing. People will appreciate more if you write content by your own, rather than copying content and spun them. to succeed in blogging you need to know what exactly your visitors are interested into.
Well a very nice sharing thanks……

I must admit, I am one of the several who have failed at blogging. I failed at all six of your points. For me, staying motivated was my biggest hurdle – which led to lack of devotion.
I can’t tell you how many blogs I follow for a while only to find them no longer updated. I suppose more people should be reading this post.
For point #2, how do you find people to work with you? Should you outsource the research task? Have a partner? Or maybe accept guest posts on your blog.

I didn’t notice that ignoring the analytics is what I’ve been doing for the past 3 years.
I think you called #1 right. Many people don’t realize what it takes to create a successful blog or website. Many people think that if they just throw up a few pages of content that people will flock to their site and the cash will roll in. Unfortunately it is a ton more work than that and there is no easy cash.

good points. I agree analytics is important, too.
Concentration should be on building a following. Monetizing should come after that. Good content and good promotion is what it starts with
I agree. Remember that everything needs dedication and time if you really want to succeed. Link building should always comes first if you want to earn using your site in the future.

Thank you for such interesting post. Here I found some useful tips for me.
Most of all I liked the point number 6. I fully agree that ignoring analytics is one of the biggest blogging mistake. Nowadays there many powerfil tracking webanalytics services. Personally I choose Google Analytics for such purposes. I often check my conversions and bounce rate to be be aware of the user’s behavior on my site.
