Out of the hundreds of millions of blogs in existence today, whether it’s due to your promotion, a quality referral, or simply dumb luck, a reader somehow ends up on yours! So how do we ensure we captivate our new guest?
I think we can all agree that many blogs are terrible. Visitors can tell whether or not they want to be there in less than five seconds. And even if they stayed long enough to finish reading one article, they better have a reason to stick around.
You know what they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression so to ensure that you introduce yourself in the best way possible, here are 8 things that you should do to capture the attention of the newly acquired visitor:
1. Elegant design and usability
This is your chance to make an instant impression, literally. In a blink of an eye, the visitor could decide to stay or leave based on how your blog looks.
Your blog doesn’t have to be extremely graphic heavy but it must have at least the basic elements of good design and usability. That means it should be easy to read (e.g. font types, font sizes, background contrast) and easy to navigate.
2. Clear niche
The best blogs are often the ones that have an obvious topic. Sprinkling in off-topic posts are OK from time to time if you already have a large following but if you’re just starting up, I would choose a niche and stick with it. It should be really obvious what your blog is about.
3. Bio page
As I recently wrote in my first steps for brand identity article, you better have a bio somewhere. If it’s not a full page, then make sure there’s at least a small bio on the home page and/or the bottom of each article.
This is one of the first things new visitors will look for. Before they commit any more time to your blog, they want to know that you are an authority on your subject. This is one of your cornerstones to building that trust. A nice looking picture of you doesn’t hurt either.
4. Descriptive article titles
If you want your visitor to read other articles on your blog, then your article titles should be descriptive (and catchy) enough to coax them. For example, look at how I named three of my more popular articles:
Deep linking gives old posts new life
NoFollow vs DoFollow: Who wins?
Why having a blog is like having a girlfriend
You can pretty much tell what the articles are about.
5. Quality content
This is a no-brainer but how many times have you seen a good blogger post a bad article? Sometimes, these bloggers feel obligated to stick to a posting schedule and on bad days, they deliver a piece of garbage just to meet the quota. If it were up to me, I’d skip the bad article and leave the previous good article one up at the top.
Look at it this way, each article you write has a chance of being the first (and only) article a new visitor reads. That means you can’t afford to have any bad posts.
6. Descriptive anchor text
As I wrote in my anchor text for SEO article, you must consider how you’re labeling your links. The text will allow your new visitor to see other related posts.
7. Featured articles
Although you may be proud of all of your articles, some are classics that you don’t want buried deep inside your site. Make a featured articles area so they can be prominently displayed.
8. Good use of categories
Archives by month is nice but really, who uses those? People want to see a logical breakdown based on topics. That means you should have a set of sub-niche categories on your home page and nothing should be “uncategorized”. Keeping it to 4-7 categories gives you bonus points.

Ooooh, loading speed! I totally take that for granted but you’re absolutely right, some sites are so sluggish that I give up after 10 seconds or so.
So true that these require constants tinkering. That’s the fun part of having a blog organism I guess!
Hi Gabe,
As usual great post, thank you … what I am taking away is to put up a featured articles section and a bio/pic. Small tweaks here and there when added over time make a huge difference.
Speaking of bios, just read yours. What is that word? supercalifragilistiexpialidocious!!! yes, I can see the importance of one. Before the week is out (that would be Sunday, mine will go up too

Hi Gabe, I’m happy to know that my blog has almost all of these except for the featured article. Secondly, I’ll be looking forward to seeing your updated bio! I’ll pop in early next week to check it out.
Although you should stay in your niche most of the time, you could always write about a sub-niche or branch out into a related niche.
For instance, your site has to do with personal finance. Instead of producing articles about investing and saving money all the time, you could do a review on a car that provides value or the tax benefits of owning your own business.

I think that finding your niche is definitely very important. As a blogger who is just starting out I find that this is something that I’ve really struggled with.
I have a domain name that has the potential to cover a wide variety of topics.
If you are going to have a website that jumps around from topic to topic and covers such a wide range of topics than I think it is important to structure your website accordingly. This is where categorizing can be immensely useful.
Ah yes first impressions are key. Moving to a custom wordpress, and changing a to a new theme last night I have managed to double on site time, and my traffic is now at least 60+ hits a day

Quality content is also key, or otherwise your competitors will eat you alive.

Great article, you have mentioned all the great points which are essential for SEO, exposure and first impression of blog.
As I responded to another reader, loading time is undoubtedly important. It’s just an assumption that I made but perhaps it’s worth updating the article for.
Striking a good balance is key. You’re right with the point on design, however, I don’t believe it’s necessary to have award-winning design, just error-free, friendly, and respectable.
Bloggers can get away with lacking some things but decent design and great content must be evident.
Thanks, Himanshu. Even though the goal of the article is to highlight what makes a good first impression for the new visitor, you’re correct that some of the items on the list have SEO benefits as well.
True! I made the mistake of not having a clear niche when I was getting started and its like im having different types of audience every week!

Nice sharing tips Gabe. One more point that I think we’re all bloggers must consider is “readability”. People come to our blog to read articles, and the easier they are to read, the better. A design that obscures the content will only turn visitors away. My 2 cents

My blog has picked up a lot since starting it and I have most of the points above covered although I’m in need of a new logo as my current one is just outdated.
BTW, I think another point that could be added is a logo. this plays an important role as many users remember it.

Good point. The logo is part of a blogger’s branding and there should be a synergy with the look and feel of the rest of the site.

Ironically these are the two things that tend to play against each other the most. An experienced designer will tell you time and again that they are going back over it constantly to find that one thing…
In fact, that’s one good way to pick a designer; ask him/her questions regarding design versus load time and check the responses. I promise you’ll spot the amateurs real fast.

Dennis Edell´s last blog ..How Do You Feel About A Static Homepage On A Blog?
Hey Gabe, awesome article. I gave some of my thoughts in individual replies above.
I LOVE that very first line, dumb luck indeed! (Otherwise known as SEO.) LOL
These are some really excelent tips, lets see how zi do as zi try my best with all of them…
1. I think I did well with my custom theme, and it will be even better when I move blogs and unveil a MUCH updated version of the theme.
2. This will also become MUCH clearer on the new blog starting right from the tag line…I don’t merely run an IM blog as many might think and some even think it’s an MMO blog; this honestly has me baffled.
3. For the sake of newbies, you may want to change “Bio” for “About”, know what I mean? Or at least have both….some blogs have that little bio paragraph in the upper right sidebar, but ALL do need an About Me page.
4. Not just for search engines anymore! Being an avid commenter, I actually think more of the commentluv plugin when thinking up titles…not to mention it should coincide with your concluding call to action.
5. Write crap, stay broke – not much more to it. lol
6. OK I could use some help I think. lol. I tend to find it difficult sometimes to KW links and still make it flow well with the article; make sense?
7. I have most popular now, but will have both on the new blog.
8. HELP! LOL. In my ever striving vigilance for “user navigation” I think I actually overdo it – have you seen how many sub-categories I have? I may be a little too anal.
Hmm, perhaps I should have just track backed to my own article.

Dennis Edell´s last blog ..How Do You Feel About A Static Homepage On A Blog?
Thanks for taking the time to respond with such detailed feedback!
Anyway, if you’re having trouble with using anchor text for deep linking, you could always try Google’s keyword tool. This will give you a set of keywords and phrases you could create sentences or paragraphs around.
As for categories, you do have a lot. Every blogger at some point considers revamping that entire area. I mean, when we first start, none of know how to organize our topics optimally. What you could try is sticking to 4-5 top-level categories. You’ll probably end up with 6-7 in the process. Then instead of having deeper levels, you could simply use tags. Sure, it’s going take some time to clean up but in the long run, it’ll create a valuable user experience.
You are right Bang on Target! First I was a pretty casual blogger but when I started following such tips from other Bloggers my blog sees an increased audience and also appreciation from other bloggers.

Great post, lots of helpful information. Will try to apply them to my blog, but do you think writing is something a blogger should go to school to learn? Or just through trial and error the blogger will develop a professional writing style? I think some bloggers have good ideas and want to put them down but because they have poor writing skills it comes across as poor content.
Iskander´s last blog ..Programs that just dont work, or are fake..
Phew! I’m glad to see you don’t mind my blabbering on in such a manner. I remember one blogger in particular that used to actually delete such comments; true story. lol
I know the keywords I want to/should use, it’s just when I read back over it, the sentence rarely flows properly anymore…I’m not sure how a KW tool would help that.
Categories – Although it is good for SEO, ths is why I personaly never advise sticking the category in one’s permalink.
Irony at it’s finest I suppose. In my tireless effort to make navigation as simple as possible, I may overdo it a bit.
My TLC’s (top level categories) are good) I think some of my first level subs are OK, perhaps a little overdone. Are you saying sub-categories are not needed at all, or am I breaking things down a wee too much?
I create categories following two rules – thinking of the newbie who may know nothing and also how I like to search blogs that cover multiple topics under one niche. IMcblogs for example.
Ex: TLC – Blogging Tips. Awesome, however I see the #157 pertaining to how many posts are there. Oh crap! I’m merely looking for tips on how to boost RSS subscribers and have 10 spare minutes to do so….I know I can’t be the only one, so hence my blogging tips TLC and RSS sub; and so it goes…
OK technically, blogging tips is a sub and RSS is a 2nd sub because “web marketing tips” is the TLC…this is because I also do offline tips and need to differentiate.
You get my point though
. Perhaps we could start an email banter on this? Contact me anytime, I will listen to any tips you can provide.

IMO, you don’t need all those subcategories. But I could be wrong.
Why don’t you ask your readers? See if anyone uses them or cares for them? It would make an interesting post and you’ll get the feedback you need.
Learning to blog effectively is best done OTJ (on the job). Absorb as much as you can from so-called experts and then experiment with their tips on your site.
Writing, however, is another story. If writing is your weak area, then I suggest either taking a writing class or at a minimum, pick up a really good writing book.
I don’t think elaborate design is necessary. The site just has to look professional (e.g. ads don’t overlap content, readable text, consistent throughout, etc…).
And I think the look and feel of your site is on par for your topic and audience.
We, as bloggers, always get tired of looking at our own sites and are always itching to make a change.
All of the point are valid. You must have unique content and titles to stand out in blogosphere. Thank u for the tips.

@Dennis:
1. Throw out subcategories and keep it to 6-7 categories at the most.
2. If you want to highlight certain topics, use tags instead, which you could go nuts with and end up with 50.
3. Add a tag cloud on your home page.
1. I could possibly get through it with a bottle of Valium…I’ll give it a shot.
2. Also not a good idea, “they” say to keep a low minimum on tags also.

Nice tip…
Excellent criteria there, though usually impression is beaten by genuine connection with the Author almost immediatetly and the willingness to reasonate or be inspired by them.
The key phrase is “genuine connection”. From what I read daily, many bloggers fail to bridge that gap. The words are so hollow you can hear the echo coming through the monitor.
All of things you mention are right! I think Content is still the King and niche, design are also important to meet everyone’ demand. Thanks

Not sure if you were referencing another article that I wrote (Blog like you’re writing for a 14-year old girl) but I try to keep my articles simple with very little word lard.
I just wanted to say 2 things
1) I have a personal blog and I have about 4 major niches. That isn’t to say my traffic is terrible. I feel if you want to make money or attract a specific group yes its of course important to have a niche. But I find my target audience to be a scattered group of people who in turn will spread the word.
2) I use an archives page and I find this works best. Readers will often times come back and click on the last link they left off on.
