Alright, WordPress 2.9 Carmen was released over the weekend and it seems like every other blogger is “announcing” its release. Looks like WP gave us an early Christmas present.
True, WP 2.9 has been anticipated for some time now and the laundry list of features is actually pretty long. However, many of them are just minor improvements and bug fixes.
What makes this article a bit different is that I’m going to separate the really cool stuff from the otherwise blah pile of enhancements. Here’s what I think are the top 5 features of WP 2.9:
1. Upgrade plugins all at once
Not only can you upgrade all your plugins with two clicks (i.e. Select All, Upgrade Plugins) but WP 2.9 also checks compatibility for you.
2. Edit images easily
No more editing in another tool, saving it, and then loading the finished image in. Cropping, rotating, flipping, and scaling can all be done in WP 2.9.
3. Embed media quickly
Just paste the URL into the post and you’re done. You don’t even have to be in HTML mode.
4. Repair and optimize your database
WP 2.9 can look for database problems and repair it with a single click of the Repair Database button. If you prefer, WP 2.9 can also improve database performance with the Repair and Optimize Database button.
5. Trash without fear
If you delete a post, a comment, or a page, by default it stays in the trash for 30 days so you can restore it (you can choose when to take out the trash).
Seriously, I know many of my colleagues skipped the WP 2.8.6 upgrade but even if you’re not one who keeps up with every single release, WP 2.9 is a must-have since there were also over 500 defects that were addressed.
Now, let the WP 3.0 anticipation begin! BTW, it’s due in Spring 2010.

Wordpress 2.9 brings so many cool new features.
I know many people though who are waiting for 2.9.1 which is normal.
Glad I upgraded by blogs

Rumor has it that in WP 5.4, your articles can be written for you while you sing in the shower. I can’t wait for that release.
I can’t wait for the day speech to text actually works.

The image editing feature is my favourite addition to 2.9
David Hobson´s last blog ..Brittany Murphy has died Aged just 32
That feature is definitely going to save me a bit of time in the long run.
Image editing feature is a good one, but i cant find some new buttons like repair database and where to find trashed posts? may be i need to explore it more. A few screenshots would have been better.

The repair and optimize functionality is a bit tricky. There’s a two-step approach to get it to work…
1. Add this to the wp-config.php file: define(‘WP_ALLOW_REPAIR’, true);
2. Enter this URL in your browser: http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/maint/repair.php
Personally I’ve just uploaded to 2.9 from 2.7 and, frankly, I have no complaints. However, it just seems practically the same to me. Sure, there’s very small yet noticeable changes dotted around, but generally speaking it’s just the same :p

All in all, your blog won’t necessarily be better because of the new version. However, many of the new features should save us time.
WP 2.9 have some really good features which we were missing a lot in past versions. I am sure it would be a fun to use it. And thanks for mentioned the reasons here.

I heard the upgrading to 2.9 crashed a few plugins to a few people, though I didn’t have a problem personally.

Some plugins that aren’t up-to-date may not work with WP 2.9 but that argument can be used with any release.
Moving forward, the plugin compatibility feature should help a bit when upgrading to future versions of WP.
Most of the plugin makers have now started to upgrade their plugins to be compatible with 2.9, I was just amazed to find that 5-6 of my plugins were awaiting upgrades

I think that the editing of images is a cool feature to have and it will help many of us.

I’ve already used the image editing feature.
What’s most interesting to me is the advanced article type functions which haven’t quite made it into front end yet. Got postponed again as I understand. It will be cool to write a “Note” and have it display only in a specific sidebar widget for example.”

I’m totally OK with their phased approach, regardless of whether or not these features are actually ready for prime time. I’m sure WP is saving some of them so future releases have more than just a ‘security update’ tag next to them.
Still, WP is simply the most elegant blogging platform and no one is even close!

I did upgrade it and the box buttons are super classy.. concerning about those features of wp 2.9 they HAD to add ‘em to keep der bloggers happy

Bangaloreloka´s last blog ..What’s my Blogging Plan 2010 with Bangaloreloka?
One thing WP has always done well is keeping bloggers happy.
They could probably get away with doing a bit less since WP has the market cornered as the ultimate bloggers’ platform but I’m glad they continue to innovate and deliver.
My favorite feature so far is that upgrading to 2.9 got rid of that “Attempted upgrade to 2.8.6 has failed. Please try again now.” Like heck I will – two failed tries, to me, spells b-u-g-s. 2.9 seems stable, so far.
Unfortunately, the one feature I’d really like to see (code named, “Keep your mitts off my hand-coded HTML, darnit!”) doesn’t seem to have been implemented.

WP 2.8.6 was supposedly addressed two security issues so it shouldn’t have caused too many fits.
Anyway, glad WP 2.9 has been smooth for you so far.
Editing images has really become simple thanks for sharing it.

You’re right that WordPress is primarily focused on the self-hosted app (wordpress.org).
Since the free WordPress (wordpress.com) has many limitations compared with the aforementioned, there’s only so much that they can offer in terms of new functionality.
That said, it’s still the best free blogging tool out there. No recent news on updates though.
The trash & Image editing features are really cool
