standout The 5 bestest features of WordPress 2.9 Alright, WordPress 2.9 Carmen was released over the weekend and it seems like every other blogger is “announcing” its release. Looks like WP gave us an early Christmas present.

True, WP 2.9 has been anticipated for some time now and the laundry list of features is actually pretty long. However, many of them are just minor improvements and bug fixes.

What makes this article a bit different is that I’m going to separate the really cool stuff from the otherwise blah pile of enhancements. Here’s what I think are the top 5 features of WP 2.9:

1. Upgrade plugins all at once

Not only can you upgrade all your plugins with two clicks (i.e. Select All, Upgrade Plugins) but WP 2.9 also checks compatibility for you.

2. Edit images easily

No more editing in another tool, saving it, and then loading the finished image in. Cropping, rotating, flipping, and scaling can all be done in WP 2.9.

3. Embed media quickly

Just paste the URL into the post and you’re done. You don’t even have to be in HTML mode.

4. Repair and optimize your database

WP 2.9 can look for database problems and repair it with a single click of the Repair Database button. If you prefer, WP 2.9 can also improve database performance with the Repair and Optimize Database button.

5. Trash without fear

If you delete a post, a comment, or a page, by default it stays in the trash for 30 days so you can restore it (you can choose when to take out the trash).

Seriously, I know many of my colleagues skipped the WP 2.8.6 upgrade but even if you’re not one who keeps up with every single release, WP 2.9 is a must-have since there were also over 500 defects that were addressed.

Now, let the WP 3.0 anticipation begin! BTW, it’s due in Spring 2010.
