A familiar guest writer today…Melissa Tamur!

If you use WordPress for your website or blog, it’s a good idea to explore the available plugins. Plugins enhance the WordPress experience and can allow you to integrate other important services to expand and publicize your posts.

1) Twitter Widget Pro

Integrate your Twitter feed seamlessly into your blog. Control the timestamp on tweets and decide whether or not to display user avatars. Want high visibility for your tweets? Support for multiple Twitter feeds is included, and Twitter Widget Pro allows you to post your feeds on numerous pages across your site.

2) Simple Facebook Connect

Add multiple levels of Facebook Connect functionality to your site. Publish posts directly to your Facebook profile or Page without having to leave your WordPress dashboard. This plugin also allows you to add a Fan Box widget or Like button; integrate your Facebook stream, status, and activity feeds; and display upcoming events or fan counts. You can even add support for logging in and commenting directly with your Facebook account.

3) Sociable

Get your posts out there with Sociable! Support for 99 different social bookmarking sites lets your users share your blog or site all over the web. With Sociable, you can display as many or as few social bookmarking options as you wish, including a button to allow users to share posts via e-mail. If you can’t find the site you want, it can be added directly to the plugin code with ease.

4) Find Me On

Connecting with visitors and readers is more important than ever as social networking grows. Find Me On works with up to 73 social networks. By displaying your profile icons in the sidebar of your site, it allows people to find you, friend you, or contact you no matter where you are. Support for more networks is being added all the time, so if you don’t see your favorite social networking site, you can contact the developer and request that it be added.

5) Advertising Manager

If you use ad networks to generate revenue or support your site, this widget lets you control up to 15 of them from one place, including Google Adsense. Advertising Manger makes it simple to import and manage your ads. Place ads in your sidebar; integrate them into your post templates; or limit the types of ads that are displayed depending on a post’s author, tags, category, and more.

These plugins can help expand your WordPress site and publicize your blog across the web. The ability to control all of your social networking and advertising in one place makes it easier to connect with users and build a strong following.

How would you like to make a dollar in 10 seconds, about the time it takes to send a tweet?

So you have followers and Twitter is sending you traffic but what about making some money along the way? Easy! And I mean really easy.

I received quite a few varying opinions from my last Twitter article about following everyone under the Sun (who wants to follow me). As I mentioned before, there’s no right way or wrong way to use Twitter, just whatever you feel works best for you. Regardless of your personal Twitter philosophy, one common theme was that people wanted to make money from Twitter, either directly or indirectly. I didn’t even intend on following up with an article like this but I got several emails related to generating income with Twitter over the weekend.

Let’s start with a simple fact. It’s true, even though you’ll get a ton of traffic from Twitter, it’s really tough to track conversions. However, it’s really easy to make money using Sponsored Tweets.

Simple step-by-step approach to earning from Twitter

1. Assuming you have a Twitter account, sign up with Sponsored Tweets.

Anyone with a Twitter account can join but in order to be visible to advertisers, Sponsored Tweets requires that your Twitter account is at least 60 days old, 100 followers, and 100 status updates. If you don’t have those, get moving!

2. Build a following.

Obviously you have to have a following to make money from tweets. The great thing is that this can be done any time, even if you don’t meet the requirements from step 1. There are many Twitter tools out there but I personally use buzzom. And yes, you can target your niche there.

3. Start low…real low.

Last year, I suggested that you go with 25% of the suggested price. With so many people involved now, it’s getting more and more competitive. Therefore, today I would go under 10% of what the suggested price is. Sponsored Tweets is so crowded that unless you low-ball, you’re not going to get any offers.

4. Increase your price only if you are receiving more offers than you’d like.

Don’t increase your price just because you have more followers. Instead, base it on the number of offers you’re getting. Even then, just raise it a little at a time and monitor the results.

5. Decline offers that are not aligned with the message you’d like to send.

Not only will some of your followers hate you or leave you but in the long run, they will increase your CPC (a bad thing — see next section below) and you’d get fewer offers because of it.

Final tweets thoughts

As you can see, it’s pretty straight forward. Plus, it only takes a minute to type the tweet. That’s the good news.

Over time, you will be judged based on your CPC (cost per click). Advertisers look at several factors and CPC is one of the more telling ones. You could have 100,000 followers but if only two people click the link in your $1.00 tweet, your CPC will be $1.00. That’s not so hot, is it?

Sponsored Tweets states that generally a CPC under $0.50 is good. Since it is somewhat crowded, I would aim for $0.25. That means you just can’t tweet a bunch of garbage and hope for the best since you’ll ruin your overall CPC. That’s why step 5 is so crucial.

Regardless, it’s still a great way to earn extra income and have a little fun while building your Twitter follower base.

Oh, and lastly, just to be clear, I may get a little something if you actually click on my Sponsored Tweet referral link. Feel free to read my disclosure.

If you’re already using Sponsored Tweets (or even Ad.ly), I’d love to hear your stories. If you haven’t signed up yet, care to give it try?

Surprise! More followers lead to … more followers!

Think about it, which would you rather have:

500 followers where all 500 care wholeheartedly about what you have to say

10,000 followers where only 1,000 care wholeheartedly, 4,000 care once in a while, and 5,000 barely at all

If you chose the former, then keep your Twitter friends small and connected; there’s nothing wrong with that.

However, if you’re looking to grow your following at the expense of having some people not care about your voice, then it’s a no-brainer. Get as many humans as you can to follow you and let Twitter take your site to the next level!

Which strategy are you going with?

Remember when you first signed up for Twitter and started following people? Eventually you realize that one method to build a following is to follow as many people as possible hoping that they’ll follow you back. In theory, that works but it doesn’t last forever.

Twitter stops you at 2000

Once you hit 2000 followers, you can’t follow anymore unless you have an actual following. So on day one, if you somehow found 2000 to follow, you can still have 0 followers. But in order to follow the 2001st person, you’ll need 1820 followers.

Why? That’s because once you reach the magic 2000, there’s a 10% rule to prevent mitigate spamming. So if you have 2000 followers, you can following up to 2200 people. If you have 4000 followers, you can follow up to 4400 people. Get it? The more followers you have, the more of a “buffer” Twitter will give you.

You can have as many sheep as you want

Although there is a limitation on how many people you follow, Twitter lets you have as many followers as you want. You can follow nobody but have 50,000 followers. That’s how celebs like Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, and Ellen DeGeneres all have over 3 million followers as of this writing.

Use tools to mass follow and mass unfollow

Unless you are a celebrity or have some type of real following, you obviously will have to play the follow-me-and-I’ll-follow-you-back game. Doing it manually will only take you so far. Therefore, people use tools like TwitterFollower and Buzzom and TweetDeck and GreaseMonkey, just to name a few. (I’ll do a Twitter tool review at a later date.)

When I say “mass follow” I don’t mean you have to follow everyone. I’m simply saying that you’ll have the ability to access others in a network and you can be still be selective.

Building your followers has benefits

There are many reasons to increase your following but if you’re a blogger, that should be reason enough. Ever since I actually made the effort to build a following, my traffic has increased. In fact, Twitter is now my top referral, with only direct traffic and organic searches exceeding it as overall traffic sources.

Additionally, you can get paid! As I mentioned in a previous article about Sponsored Tweets, you can get paid for sending out tweets! How long do you think it takes to fire off a tweet? There’s nothing like making a few bucks by just making a single click. If you’re going to sign up, please don’t forget who sent you there (<— not so subtle self-plug).

Long-term Twitter decision

You’ll quickly realize that following several thousand people will create a lot of noise. It’ll be non-stop shouting.

What you can do at that point is start unfollowing. You can just look through the names and pictures and you can pretty much tell which followers add no real value to you at all, other than boosting your Twitter stats.

If your ego allows it, feel free to unfollow everyone. Sure, you’ll lose some followers in the process but your ratio (one of the things that some sponsors look at) will be much better. That’s when you know you’ve really made it as a shepherd!

How long do you think it’ll take you to earn your first dollar blogging? Ask bloggers who’ve actually earned an income and almost all of them will tell you that you won’t see a cent for the first few weeks. Your first dollar? HA! You’ll have to outlast the 80% of bloggers who never made a single dollar — ever!

How long do you think it’ll take you to earn your first dollar with Twitter? You can earn your first dollar in less than a day!

Here’s how Sponsored Tweets work. An advertiser sees your profile and offers to pay you to make a tweet. You accept the offer, click a Tweet button, and the money goes into your account.

It’s easy as:

Clicking on my Sponsored Tweet referral link.

Signing up as a Tweeter.

Setting your price.

Waiting for offers.

That’s pretty much it. You can always tweak your info and settings to get the right advertisers. And if the advertiser isn’t aligned with what you want to tweet, simple decline the offer.

You will get the opportunity to set your own price but Sponsored Tweets will give you a suggested price based on your Twitter stats. One important stat is the number of followers you have so get that number up (watch your following/follower ratio though). Look for my article on how to increase your Twitter followers soon.

I’m going to offer you a parting tip. The quickest way to get your first tweets going is to price your tweets at 25% of the Sponsored Tweets suggested price. So if Sponsored Tweets recommend a $2.00 price per tweet, set your price at $0.50. It’s better to experiment with pricing while earning something in the process. If you start high and slowly work your way down, you won’t make anything for a while.

Advertisers: see my Sponsored Tweets profile here.
