One of my really early posts was differentiating between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. Although wordpress.org sites have the flexibility to do just about anything a blogger wants at a low cost of a domain and hosting, wordpress.com does has its place in the world.
That said, wordpress.org is really where nearly all serious bloggers will end up. But what about when a wordpress.com site takes off? Are you willing to essentially start over on wordpress.org?
Case in point, here’s an email I received recently:
Hi there,
I have recently learned of your site and I first want to say thanks for all the great (free!) information.
I am a relatively new blogger and started my blog on wordpress.com. I recently bought a domain (because of your advice) and would eventually like to switch over to wordpress.org. However, the information I’m finding says that wordpress.com will only allow a temporary redirect, not a permanent one. Which means, of course, that I will lose my Google PageRank (3) and my Alexa rating (currently around 2.3million).
My question to you is – do you have any idea how long it would take to regain my ratings? And should I wait until my domain has been out there for awhile before making the switch?
Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!
Those of you who have contacted me via email or contact form, you know I always respond if you’re not a spammer. Although I’ve never even heard of this person prior to her reaching out to me, I did respond. Before I post what I responded with, I really want to know what you think.

Page rank 3 is not bad, but also not something to worry about losing. You can actually gain that back in almost no time. I had my free blog for 2 months and I did not even read about redirects when I started over. I get sentimental.
Switching to wordpress.org make you free to do everything, i.e edit and add themes or pluging

Switch as early as today. This will save the wordpress.com user lots of headache on the near future. Or, why not, retain the wordpress.com and start a new blog at wordpress.org. The blogger can even use the wordpress.com to link out to the new domain he purchased. Just my idea.

I couldn’t agree more. In addition to that, with all the relationships you have established with your wordpress.com blog such as link reciprocals and loyal followers, you can start contacting them to change the backlinks you have on their sites, pointing at your new wordpress.org blog or with your readers to subscribe on your new blog. With that said, all of your efforts from your previous blog won’t be put to waste
just my opinion.
Who really cares about rankings, trophies, and bells and whistles? PR and Alexa rankings are the last things you should be concerned with. Creating a blog shouldn’t be about that; it’s about creating great content. Everything else should be secondary. Don’t think of the task of moving over to a self-hosted WordPress blog as a chore. Think of it as a challenge for you to start fresh and do even better.

Just wondering why people are always afraid of getting their blog being deleted, and consider it as one of the main reasons why you should have to switch to wordpress.org. The point is, as long as you always comply to the TOS, then you don’t have to worry about your blog being deleted.

I highly recommend anyone considering blogging to just fork over the $10 for the domain and find some cheap hosting and just do the wp.org from the start. The plugins and SEO value are enormous. Many hosting companies like Godaddy have quick installs for WP where you basically just click a few buttons and it installs it for you. Then you just need to find a theme and there are literally thousands to choose from.

PR changes constantly. It’s possible you were just barely PR2 before and now you’re a high PR1.
Just like anything else, you have to maintain your status. That means your backlinks need to continue to provide you with quality juice.
Page rank depend on how many good and quality backlinks comes to your website from outside of your website. You should do some seo work to increase your page rank.

My advise is.. if you want to start a blog and you don’t want to have that problem like in the post, don’t use wordpress.com! just buy you own domain and hosting!
