Novice bloggers and blogger wannabes, have you found your topic yet? Remember, you must choose something that interest you in one or another. Today, I’m going to give you an example of someone who stumbled upon a niche: Heather B. Armstrong AKA dooce (www.dooce.com)
Some people love her, some people hate her. Basically, she started blogging in 2001 about motherhood (and often, not so good things about it). In 2005, she and her husband were able to both quit their jobs and just run her blog site. According to her statement on Oprah, she makes $40,000 US a month just blogging about being a mom!
I don’t know Heather personally and I’m not condoning everything she writes about. In fact, I’ve only been to her site a few times. However, I am very impressed that she was able to grow her home biz into something lucrative. So in short, she pulls in nearly half a million year by updating her blog regularly. Heather also does a lot of other things right but the important thing is…surprise…she writes about something that she is passionate about.
Passion can take you a long way. In fact, it might be the only thing that will keep you going after a few months of writing to an audience of one. I’m hopeful that you can see the passion oozing from every word that I write.
When I see articles asking new bloggers to use keyword searches to help them “discover” a blog topic, it drives me insane. You can’t pretend to be passionate about something you found on a keyword list! Your readers will see right through the phoniness and worse, you’ll be bored out of your mind and quit!
How many blog quitters do you know because they chose a “lucrative” topic but never made any traction?

I am a business professional
with an entrepreneurial spirit. Although I have an MBA and managed websites and IT departments

Maintaining keyword is always important to get good SERP position even when you write for your passion. Community depended blog is not good for some niche(example: Technology), where some niche must have it(example: Blogging, Money Making). So, it depends where you want to go. However, I always love to write first and then research on keyword to make necessary adjustment without effecting reading quality.

I believe that a well-written article naturally has quality keywords in it. Of course a little research can be done to uncover even better ones but I generally stick to the organic method.
passion first, keyword second. It mean that we choose what topic that we are passionate about, and then do keyword research according it. That’s my opinion for this problem.

You can’t pretend to be passionate about something you found on a keyword list!
So true. Every time I look at a keyword research tool, I don’t get much out of it. It seems a lot of the big keywords for my niche are just from aspects of it that I’m not interested in. I feel if I ever chased them, the most I’d ever come up with with a clumsily written, ill-informed article that won’t get anywhere good in the search results anyways because it wont’ be valuable to many.

For my blogs, I never use a keyword tool other than showcasing it for others.
However, when I write for my corporate clients, I do use the a keyword tool. The article won’t be as natural but I have to focus on certain targets that my clients are looking to reach.
I think I watched that same Oprah show. Was it about stay at home moms having more leisure time then they care to admit?
I like rant blogs they are fun to read.

It was so long ago I have no idea what the overall theme was. The reality is that I don’t watch Oprah but happened to stumble across it while flicking channels during late night. Who knew there were Oprah reruns for night owls?
On the flip-side, you best check the lucrativeness of your passion. nothing worse then putting it all in and finding out there’s no market…not only did you lose the business end, but the frustration may cause a loss in said passion too.

It’s a good point but honestly, there’s almost no niche too small. I know people who blog for a small handful of people for fun. It’s a way to form a tight bond with others who share the same interest. Making money may not be very high on the priority list for these folks.
Agreed. I write what I like. Love my new HTC HD2 and my blog is full with its posts now. This help me keep blogging.

I think the most common quitters due to diving into a topic to be like CNN. Quickly they will realize that it’s hard work. That goes for me too since I’ve shut down my wiki/forum projects and barley contribute to my 4 small blogs. CTB still going strong though

Gabe:
I haven’t heard of Heather’s site but being a mom I am going to go check it out, especially since it sounds as though she may be somewhat controversial and I like women who can do that. (I’m not one of them very often).
I’ll admit I’m not really that passionate about blogging – mainly because I don’t really enjoy writing. In person/on the phone, I’m funny and quick-witted but somehow I haven’t been able to get that to come out in the written word. Maybe as I find my “voice” I will become more passionate about blogging.

Not everyone loves every part of blogging but as long as you can keep only a small portion in the dreaded column, you can get by.
BTW, maybe you can enjoy writing a bit more if you can come up with a formula that works for you. For example, open with a funny story, tie it to a relevant current topic, then finish with a lesson. And keeping it concise (say under 250 words) can also make things interesting.
Gabe – coming up with a formula is a good idea. I just read a post over at V3 that had me cracking up because it was about PEEPS marshmallow candies.
I keep reading funny posts at various writer’s site to see how they meld their humor into their posts.
Eventually I will figure it out!
I’ve never actually used a keyword tool. This is the first time I’ve ever admitted that.

Now I don’t feel so bad about hating those keywords with such a passion I only started doing SEO a few posts ago ;-P

Don’t get me wrong, I still perform SEO and include keywords as keywords. I just don’t use keyword research for the body of my articles because I find that it can affect my writing negatively.

Passion is as passion does … actually I do love to write and therein perhaps is my problem, lengthy posts which take a lot of time. I must say I like your short and to the point posts and should take a page out of yours.
Re keywords … while I have a spate of them that I sprinkle here and there in my posts, I concentrate on one chosen one for positioning, and when that happens then I go for the next one.

Passion is one thing but being literate and coherent in the manner in which you portray you life in the blogosphere is the real skill.

Having passion for what you’re blog is about will definitely take you far. The fact of the matter is that developing a successful blog takes time, and a lot of time spent on tasks that you don’t see any immediate return from. Passion is what’ll keep you going no matter what.

I agree with others. You create a blog just to express your ideals, thoughts, knowledge, how to relate them? Hitting the right topic that could attract readers, that’s what i do most here. I watch and read blogs, because it really informative and in which it hits my interest. Keyword niche is also necessary so just make it one requirements to choose the right words on the topic you may want to publish.

I actually prefer the organic method. If I write relevant content, the article should naturally have keywords in there!

Not that every article has to be light-hearted but when a blogger is never funny, that blog won’t last very long.

Exactly, regardless of the topic, the passion can be easily distinguished in-between the lines, if readers won’t find it, they’ll walk away at some point.
