Now that you have your uniquely designed logo, it’s time to take care of that favicon. If you actually had your logo designed by a pro, you should be able to ask them to produce a favicon for you at no charge. This is really so simple that even if they don’t offer that service, you should be able to create one yourself.
Just to be clear, a favicon is simply the icon users can associate to your site. Typically, a favicon is just a 16 pixel by 16 pixel little graphic that is saved as a ico file. At a minimum, it appears on the users’ browser tabs, address bars, and favorites lists so it extends your brand image. This can be created from scratch or from an existing image.
Swing by http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon and give it a whirl. It’s a free tool and should only take you a few minutes! Once you’re done, just save that ico file and place it in your server’s folder. You should be able to ftp to your host and drop it in the root directory. That’s all there is to it!
Now, where’s yours?

If it’s not coming up, it’s possible you have it cached on your browser. A favicon shouldn’t take a long time to load. Try a different browser and see what happens.
Anything related to branding just happens to be pure coincidence! In fact, I wouldn’t have realized it if you didn’t point it out.
Is favicon really good? How to improve my site’s logo to more popular?
Favicons are cool – really have taken off with tabbed browsers.
By the way, what do you think of Google’s favicon – I don’t like it too much. Took me some time to figure out what it was
This is interesting! Is this the same as gravatar?
A gravatar is a graphic that is recognized across websites – it lets blogs and “similar sites display user-provided pictures from a central database.”

I have had very good luck with crisp favicons using Inkscape:
1. Set the paper size to 16×16 icon.
2. Draw the logo, whatever, using the vector tools.
3. Export to bitmap.
It seems to get all the aliasing done correctly.
Chami is ok, and so are many of the other online tools, but Inkscape really seems to get it right. And it is a hard problem… I helped write an ebook on favicons!

I think I tried Inkscape before. The thing is, it’s hard to go wrong with using any tool to create a favicon. For me, I had to load my file and make some tweaks to get it to look right.

This is interesting! Is this the same as gravatar?I liked reading it
I had noticed the favicon-thing whenever I would visit established websites. However, I only recently found out what that “logo” thing to the left of the url in the toolbar of the borwsers. Called a “favicon”. Thanks you for your post. I think one really can’t be going “professional” online or at least have such a look without it. I will be following your advice (thanks for showing how) to get my own favicon. Even if it’s not a permanent good one.
I love using the .ico plugin for Photoshop for saving the favicons.
