If you’ve been following along, you should know by now that leaving comments on other blogs can boost your traffic. Obviously, it can help directly by others seeing your comment and clicking on your link to arrive at your site. But what about an indirect benefit?
Susan made a comment yesterday on my link building article that reminded me of an SEO topic that I planned on covering but haven’t discussed until now. So when you leave a comment on another blog, are you getting link juice? Well, it depends on whether the blog has NoFollow or DoFollow for the comments area.
NoFollow and DoFollow intro
Let’s start with their origins. Spammers leave comments with lots of links on others’ blogs, just to get link juice back to their site. To them, it doesn’t matter that their post is irrelevant, way too long, not readable, etc. They simply want to stuff keywords and links just to get a little bump in search engine rankings. This makes some comments areas, especially for popular blogs, unreadable.
In 2005, Google’s spam team created an HTML attribute do deter comment spammers. That’s when the NoFollow tag (rel=”nofollow”) was born. Adding this to comments prevents search engine spiders from crawling the links so that there is no passive benefit from leaving comments.
There is actually no such thing as a DoFollow tag; not having the NoFollow code inherently becomes DoFollow.
Almost all blogs start with NoFollow comments
By default, both WordPress (WP 1.5 and up) and blogger/blogspot have NoFollow comments. So ever since you first created your blog, anyone who left comments never received any indirect benefit from you unless you actively did something to take the tag off.
Why would you want to remove the NoFollow tag that’s meant to protect you from spammers? Well, for one, you may want to encourage activity on your blog by offering link juice back to the people making comments. Secondly, there are wonderful plugins like Akismet that should keep your spam from actually being published anyway.
For the record, Free Blog Help dot Com has a DoFollow comments area so anyone leaving comments do get some of my juice. So far, none of my sites have been “abused” so until then, everyone gets a bit of love when they contribute.
Winner: DoFollow
Any page that has a PR greater than 0 will be giving link juice and it will be shared equally among all the links on each page. So if a page has PR2, all the juice is distributed to all the links on that particular page; a PR3 page would give a little bit more. By making comments DoFollow, you are allowing links from the comments area to get some of that juice.
Probably the easiest way for most of us to remove the NoFollow tag is to use a simple plugin. I personally use the DoFollow plugin by Semiologic for all of my sites. If you are using WordPress, you can alternatively just do a plugin search for DoFollow.
When NoFollow should still be used
Taking the NoFollow tag off may sound like a great idea but not in all cases. If you have advertisers paying you for links, they probably don’t want to share juice with all of your comments. Since comments don’t show up on home pages, you’re usually fine. But if you are writing a review article, you may consider making the advertiser’s links the only ones getting juice from that particular page.

It’s good to get increase PR by commenting on some dofollows blogs. But nofollow blogs are not bad in the sense of PR.
Nofollow blogs do not give PR like follow blogs do, but with that being said if a nofollow blog is popular you will get some traffic from leaving a comment on that blog because people will click on your link if you left a informative comment. This is the same with a follow blog but you will get PR from that blog plus traffic from the informative comment you left behind.

Commenting is never bad, regardless of DoFollow or NoFollow. It’s just that if I had a choice, if I commented somewhere and the page has link juice, I wouldn’t mind having some!
I totally agree with you more. As a comentator, I prefer Dofollow to Nofollow, and as a blogger, I would use dofollow to get more active readers for my blog, although this will get more spam comments on my blog.
Akismet catches over 95% of the spam so it’s marginal work for me personally. Well worth it!
Last summer (2009) Google announced that link juice is used whether you put no follow or dofollow. The only difference is nofollow doesn’t pass the juice on to the next page and the link juice is “wasted.”
If I was linking to a site that I didn’t want to be successful, I would put a nofollow tag. I think text ad links is one of the only programs where link juice is important for the product being advertised.
I’m all about Do Follow comments link you mentioned. There is no point in wasting outbound links; If someone takes the time to comment on my blog, they deserve some link love imo.
Thanks for sharing the gospel about nofollow/dofollow.. More people need to be informed!

Thanks for the input about the wasted juice.
As you said, if the spam is controlled, most of the time it makes total sense to reward those who swing by and offer some thoughts on your topic.
There are a handful of good DoFollow plugins, some only removing the NoFollow tag after a visitor has commented a user-defined number of times.
I like to keep mine simple. Just grab the DoFollow plugin by Semiologic I mentioned above and you should be all set.
Ok, I’m going to do the dofollow thing. I don’t personally care, and I don’t personally thing it matters much, but then again, if it helps build community, I’m all for it. I’d rather have the community than the “linkn juice.” (Which Google controls completely, so I don’t worry about it.)
Ok, done.

I’ll strip the tags from existing comments as well. Any recommended plugins for that?
Dave Doolin | Website In A Weekend´s last blog ..I’ve Just Wasted $53 on Hosting and a Domain, s***, What Now? HELP!?
Building a community is what most of us are striving for but part of that includes giving back what you can. As a visitor, I comment on sites regularly, never really looking to see if I’m getting any link juice return.
As a blogger, even if some of my visitors are commenting just to get some juice, I’m OK with that if they provide some value to the site. I’m not going to judge everyone’s motivation for posting, as long as there’s activity, I’m happy.
I don’t know of a plugin that would retroactively remove NoFollow tags.
I wouldn’t worry too much about past comments but if you look around and find one that does that, let us know.
Hey, thanks for the shoutout, homey!
Beautifully explained. The whole no/do-follow thing is a little known fact, I’ve found.

I agree that commenting is great for building relationships. However, getting link juice on DoFollow sites do help SEO, especially if you are commenting on sites that are related to yours. Also, DoFollow encourages some folks to join in the discussion, which adds more content on your site.
I don’t worry about DoFollow or NoFollow when I leave comments either.

Totally agree, but do you think Google still count links in comment area? Google Caffein is going to be out of date and some guys out there say we have to change the way we SEO now. I just hope commenting may be still helpful for us.
Phaoloo´s last blog ..6 Effective Tools To Check Your Site For Broken Links
You’ll get a backlink no matter what, you just won’t get link juice if it’s NoFollow.
Let’s assume that Google doesn’t count comments for link juice. You’ll still have direct benefits when people see your comments and come to your site. SEO is more than just passive boosts to rankings, it’s also about driving traffic to your site anyway you can.
In other words, although the SEO landscape is always changing, commenting will always be beneficial in some way.
I myself think maybe differently from you guys as I think nofollow will rule the internet sooner or later. Google will kill PR and there is no reason that DoFollow can win. Only the content! And as @Phaoloo said, comment can not be a good way for SEO, just making relationship

I have seen a lot of people starting to use DoFollow, then switching to Nofollow. My personal opinion is that on a general site it makes sense where you want a discussion. On niche sites, the spam may be a lot higher as many people comment without being aware of what the site is about.

I’m a little confused about the nofollow dofollow.
Does the nofollow just apply to the comments or to the whole WP blog?
For example if I had a link in my post to another website of mine would that be dofollow?
What about links in the sidebar? Are they also nofollow?
In any case I think it is beneficial to have dofollow on the comments because whenever I leave a comment I bookmark the page, thus sending lurve to that page…:)
It all depends on how the blog is set up. One simple way to check is to look at the page source of the page you want to know about and do a find on “nofollow”. If the tag doesn’t exist, then that page is DoFollow.

I have been researching this all day and earlier ran across the WordPress plug-in you mentioned as I def. wanted to have my blog as DoFollow.
One resource I found that may be of interest is http://dofollow.info/ – I submitted my blog there as well, their database is small at this time but I’m sure as more people become aware of it and add their blog to the directory it will be a great resource for all parties that are interested in building more links.
The one thing that I’ve had a hard time figuring out today is this:
What is the difference between a trackback and a backlink – is one more beneficial than the other? Does one affect SEO or traffic more than the other?
Any advice anyone can give me on this would be highly appreciated!
Thanks!

A trackback is a type of backlink. It’s essentially a ping (or pingback) from one site to another.
For the most part, you can assume all backlinks have some influence on SEO since they “tell” search engines that you are within a certain niche. DoFollow is a bonus since you get some link juice.

It actually makes the job for any SEO consultant a bit of a nightmare. Using something that highlights nofollow links but surely in blogs particularly they can moderate the good posts from the bad. Let the good benefit and the bad not?
Not sure I fully understand your statement.
Still, all comments that are posted get some benefit in this case. The only comments that don’t get any juice are the ones that are in the spam/trash folders.
Well what I meant was, why have nofollow anyway, moderate a blog so trash gets filtered out and let the good posts benefit from juice.
Some people get sick of the increase in spam with a DoFollow blog. Akismet does catch most spam but we still have to scan through for false positives.

Great and useful post, thanks
Great and useful post
I agree with the opinion that one should not avoid nofollow as with the spread of dofollow bloguing and the fact that nofollow is manipulated for strategical end could induce a change in google’s critera. Nevertheless a found myself that do follow was enticing better level of quality in comment publishing and generating new job like Comment Posting Concept, which finally for many reasons I find good.
i think do follow its better!
when i used it on my blog, it gave me better results than nofollow!
Another way to dofollow your blog is using Link love plugin: http://www.intenseblog.com/wordpress/link-love.html
The Link Love WordPress plugin will count the number of approved comments each commentator has left on your blog (based on the author email address) and then reward he/she with a Do-follow link in the Comment Author Link field.
