If you take a look at a lot of my articles, especially those that I published late 2009, you’ll find a bunch with close to the 100 comment stratosphere. However, it wasn’t until this week that the barrier was broken. My 10 FREE killer themes of 2009 is actually at 102 comments as of this writing.
And I’m talking legit comments, regardless of whether they’re from visitors you’ve never met before, your friends, or yourself. For the most part, cut out the spam and you’re good. For me, I typically respond to 30%-40% of comments. So when I broke the 100 comment mark on this article, I recounted those from yours truly. Out of the 102 comments for that post, 25 were mine and 77 were from others, which means I responded to just under a third of them.
The point is, exceeding the 100 comment milestone legitimately takes a lot more than elbow grease and dumb luck. Here are my takeaways:
What I learned from a 100 comment article
- Partnering with others helps. (That post was part of a writing project from another site.)
- Give people what they want. That means writing an article that actually provides value.
- The title should compel people to read on.
- Lists posts kick butt.
- Making the site DoFollow will bring more comments even though you might get a bit more spam to clean up.
- Hit hard, hit fast. Keeping articles short allows visitors to stay focused and not be bored before they reach the comment area.
- Asking a question at the end of an article steers people to the type of comment you’re looking for.
- When people take the time to write a comment that is useful and relevant, taking the time to respond makes total sense.
Obviously, I’ve already known most of these. However, seeing the results of the successful, aforementioned article certainly reinforces my thinking.
What’s your highest commented article to date?

“Hit hard, hit fast. Keeping articles short allows visitors to stay focused and not be bored before they reach the comment area.”
Reason why my posts are short
. It’s boring to read an article with ads all over, and a post thats nearly a newspaper in size. Snippets are always better…unless its a product comparison.

There are times when articles have to be longer but I usually break those up into multiple parts. Just my personal preference.
Personally, I feel the 200-500 word range is perfect for me and the visitors here.
Currently my most popular post is a list-style post and has just a few dozen comments. Congratulations on making 100 … I can only dream of such a successful post right now

It’s an awesome feeling, ain’t it Gabe! The more personable you are combined with the awesome content, and I guarantee you’ll have more.
My most popular so far on DE is my first post, sitting at 127. My most popular on DSWM (soon to be republished on DE) is at 336…a guest post on SEO.

That’s a great number!
With the exception of my featured posts area, I don’t promote any of my articles any differently from one another. No doubt I could market a few of my pillar articles a bit better.
Lots of ways you could do it, pillar or not; continue receiving comments!

Thanks for sharing the “secrets” to getting more comments. I think I am doing most of those, so focusing on getting more traffic (as I am) seems to be the next logical step.
So far the most comments on a blog of mine (from memory) as of yesterday was 6..half of which were me responding to the other 3. Still a LOT nicer than all the ones with no comments. Time to toddle off and double check what I am doing, see where I can improve

This weekend I will be going over some of your older articles re comments etc. and revisit that which needs doing.

So far I think that’s my only one. I have 30-40 comment posts weekly, 50-60 couple of times per month.

Several months back, I was getting 60-70 comments per article consistently. With the madness in my life these days, my average has been hovering close to 40.
When I’m only doing a fraction of the promotion I used to do, I’m thrilled with my numbers!
Congrats, and I know how hard it is to reach that kind of milestone! Lots of legitimate comments means that people are genuinely interested in what you are writing, and it’s great encouragement to see. It could also mean that people feel like your blog is important enough to visit and contribute to, which is no small thing, either.
Cheers,
Tia

Whoops! I forgot to mention that my highest commented article to date is “What to do when no one is commenting” go figure. lol But even though it only has 38 comments, it has 70 retweets as of today, which to me is just as important since I’m such a heavy Twitter user.

Gotta hand it to irony, don’t you?
You should write an article called “Why I won’t make $1 million this year” and see what happens.
I totally understand what you mean about spam but i think the fact your posts look like there is a buzz should mean great results for your site. good luck!
I’d trade an arm for 100 comments! Well okay maybe not, but I’d really like to do that. Guess I’ll have to learn more from you.

Thanks, but its hard to see your page, could you plz change it
Hi Gabe,
Congratulations on reaching the 100 comment post milestone. All what you outlined in the post above are truly what helps increase your comments, some users comment maybe two or three times and if you don’t reply them, they may not even visit your site again.
My post that has the highest comment is about 90 comments, it is a post about getting website traffic
Title of a post is also very important to getting lots of comments.
Thanks a lot for the great post,
Onibalusi
It’s always helpful when there’s a semblance of a “dialog” through the comments section.
Exactly! Even more effective if the blog’s author responds more often than not, I think. I know many are busy, busy people…however, taking a few moments a day to respond to at least some of the comments would help the readers realize that they ARE important to the blogger. If nothing else, outsource it and have someone reply under their name on your behalf to most and refer you to the ones that could use your special touch.

i’m so glad that i saw this site. that comment was so nice. thanks again i added the rss on this page.
are you planning to post similar posts?
Congrat on 102 comments (with this one it’s 103!). I think you gameplan about keeping the post short is a great idea. People will only read so much and if it is too long they will bounce right off your page. Short post equals a low bounce rate.
Nice Post!
Short posts have worked out well for me. I try to stick to 200-500 words per article.
Great post,thanks a lot!
I’ll have to agree on the fact that not all posts can be short, in my case where I sometimes dive into some heavier in-depth explanations, it’s hard to keep it short, as I need to make sure at the end of the article, the reader has gotten all the details. As for the short posts, the blogger needs to get straight to the point, straight to the juice and have the reader happy and rapidly documented.
