Ever do a search and the results eventually led you to a page that looked like just a bunch of the same words over and over again? That’s some “genius” loading up on keywords trying to increase search engine ranking.
“If every sentence has the phrase “lose weight fast”, that has to be bad right?”
“Does it really work?”
“Is there a secret formula?”
“How do we measure the keywords and keyword phrases within an article?”
Straight from the Office of Phrases-That-Never-Existed-Before-Search-Engines, the answer to that last question is keyword density. By definition, it’s simply the percentage a keyword or keyword phrases compared with the rest of the words in an article. Keyword stuffing is when you bloat your article with a lot of unnecessary keywords.
A quick look at keyword density

This is what happens when you think about keyword density instead of writing naturally.
You don’t need me to tell you that if every sentence has the same keyword phrase in it, that’s bad! Even if the keyword stuffing actually worked, your article would be unreadable. No one in their right mind would stay longer than two seconds before clicking the Back button.
There are so many “experts” out there who will recommend a certain keyword density. Some say go with no more than 20% (which is really insane), while others swear by staying under 5%. What do I recommend? How about writing for your audience and not for search engines?
Keyword density penalty
At the end of the day, your article has to have some keywords and keyword phrases. But that’s just common sense. As you write your article, you will naturally populate it with keywords. Think about it, try writing an article about affiliate marketing but never mention the keyword phrase ‘affiliate marketing’ ever. It’s impossible!
Those of you who are worried that search engines will penalize you for not having enough keywords, stop worrying. First of all, no one knows the algorithms for any of the major search engines. Even if someone did, that algorithm would potentially change in a month’s time anyway. The rumor mill actually states that Google is particularly more harsh on keyword stuffing than Yahoo and others but no one knows how much more.
Final thoughts on keyword density
The bottom line is this: no one knows exactly how much keyword density to use. When in doubt, just write something worth reading for your audience. Don’t worry about how many keywords there are on the page, where they are placed, or how many alternative keyword phrases you have. Instead, focus on whether or not your post provides value for your visitors.
After all, we’re all looking to build a user base for our blog and the only way to keep them coming back is to have interesting articles. You can’t do that if you’re thinking about keyword density!

Ya that’s all you see on SEO pages. Is keyword density. I find it a thing to consider but like meta tags its something Google ignores. As if you stuff your page with keywords it actually could get you banned, or punished because you where spamming them.
So really you may end up with 2-3 times that the keyword showed up. That is fine.
People pay too much attention to keywords. Some keywords are fine but you’re right, some articles are ridiculous with so many keywords and phrases.
Yeah, I don’t worry about keywords over much. I prefer to invent keywords than to chase other people’s keywords anyway.
My traffic is proving my opinion: 9500 uniques in September from compete.com. Even if some of those are bots, I’m at least a site worth crawling! My WP Stats is bearing it out too.

As always you’ve made a great point Gabe. Keyword stuffing drives me crazy. I cracked up at the blog example
The more I learn about SEO the more it seems like there are 4 simple factors:
1) Title
2) Permalink/URL
3) h1/h2
4) Inbound links with anchored text for keywords
**bonus) lots of traffic
**For a while I ranked higher on Johnchow.com than I did on my own site for “props blog” LoL
My concern is for certain words that you have to use repeatedly if you get docked for stuffing even if it is unintentional. I’ve actually rewritten some paragraphs because I realize they were too stuffed and I was worried about getting nailed for stuffing.
I never bother about keyword density anymore (And I’ve been doing SEO now for 13 years).
I write great content, structure it well…and the results are most gratifying indeed.

Gabe thanks again for another great post, I also enjoy reading all the comments everyone leaves behind. I am a newbie at blogging and having multiple websites. So I am soaking in as much of this information as I can.
Your keyword stuffing example cracked me up as well. I would much rather have my name or company name on something well written for the audience, than something that looks like that example.
Tactics like keyword stuffing actually used to work well. At least in terms of getting your site to show up to the SERP party. At the end of the day, we want people to stay.
Also, search engines have made great strides over the last decade in safeguarding against things like this. There’s so much misinformation out there that people still spam their own pages with keywords thinking that it’ll work, even if it doesn’t provide much value to begin with.
In my opinion, Keyword density is important to tell the search engine about your blog niche.
I agree. However, I believe that by writing a good article naturally, keywords will be part of it anyway.
Hey Gabe I personally write post for readers though I try to keep a check on keyword density and keyword relevancy. I make sure I don’t over do it and neither neglect it. More over it works for me atleast..
I’m not saying that I ignore keywords. I, too, keep them in mind when I do my review before publishing. I also have a keyword density tool but I never use it.
As long as we end up a good article that’s readable for real people, there’s nothing wrong with making sure that search engines find us.
After reading this, I think I am paying too much attention to keywords. Great advice. I try to write articles that people would search for because they are interested in my topics.
frankly till now i havent considered keywords and have to concentrate more on SEO now.

Hi,
Yeah I do agree but surely writing a good article includes your relative keywords in relation to the article.
I think yes.

when writing my blogs, i don’t focus on where and how often i place my keywords. I write posts that are about my keywords and therefore it comes naturally. If there aren’t enough keywords, hopefully my next post will contain them. My main goal is to get as many people reading as i can and in turn, that will lead to higher rankings in google.

We also need to consider “Keyword Density”. It should be 2 – 8% on main page. Don’t use more SERP’s may take as spam.
I am all for writing for the audience, but by ignoring keywords and keyword density, you are pretty much ignoring SEO. SEO is a service, a practice that involves intuitive and planned writing. No word is employed for no reason, and each is palced strategically in accordance with the other words. I can also confirm from recent experience that Google still penalizes keyword stuffing by at least reducing page ranking. Hope this info helps.
Oh, I forgot. Thank you Gabe for your articles. They give us a lot to keep in mind!
Hi all, I agree with these suggestions. Keep focusing your visitors only will focus SE’s automatically and in this way you will also be able to market your blog in other than SE’s.
Improve content writing.
I had an issue with a content writer for one of my websites. They repeatedly used the same keyword over and over again.. They obviously didn’t understand SEO.

Though I never care to write/edit my posts for a certain keyword density yet I think it plays a role in SEO. As far as my little experience goes with SEO – I find less than 10% keyword density works good for my post.

Its just common sense really isnt it, what you writing has to make sense and not just sound like a load of rubbish, keywords are key you just gotta have about 4-5 for every 250-500 words I think is best.
In my experience its important to mention your keyword as much as you can provided that where you write that keyword actually makes sense, ie.. it should be surrounded by relevant text. I run a shopping site and department pages with say a 500-800 word block of text which mention the key phrase maybe 5-10 times rank much better than those without.
It’s a delicate balance between creating web copy that reads well and demonstrating to Google that your site is highly relevant for specific keyword phrase.
Great advice. After reading this, I think I am paying too much attention to keywords.

One should not spam with keyword stuffing. It is better to have density between 2% to 7% otherwise Google might penalize you for keyword stuffing.
