How many of you have experienced a virus/malware attack on your computer? I would guess that most of us have encountered the maddening moment when you realize that your computer is royally screwed up at least once.
Over time, we learn to actually install protection software and back up our most coveted files (my how we just love to learn the hard way!). I’d like to think my home firewalls and up-to-date software are nearly impenetrable, even protecting all the PCs in my house from poor user judgement. Plus, all my passwords are air-tight: mixed upper/lower case with numbers and symbols and over 8 characters.
But guess what, I never really thought that the server that hosts all of my sites would be maliciously attacked! Which of course, happened over the weekend. Apparently, someone FTP’d into my host and dropped some nasty malware. Not only did it break countless lines of WP code but it also attempted to infect users who went to any of my sites. Oddly, the latter only affected folks who went to freebloghelp.com and not www.freebloghelp.com.
Sure, I have backups of all my posts and an old backup of my entire sites but wow, what a mess it would be if I had to blow the whole thing up and restore everything manually. When I finally had a moment to breathe, I called GoDaddy, my hosting provider.
GoDaddy to the rescue
I was on the phone with GoDaddy’s tech support for less than 30 minutes. In that time, I showed the tech where the issues were, he reproduced the issues, he sent me links on how to resolve the problem, he walked me through the solution step-by-step, and he gave me advice on how to prevent this from happening again in the future. Not bad in half an hour, right?
In short, here’s what we decided to do to correct the problem. Rather than trying to identify, quarantine, and clean the infected areas, we deleted everything I had in my host account. I then simply restored from the back up point of my choice, which ended up being a few days back, just to be extra safe. If you didn’t know this, GoDaddy has backups for the last 30 days for my WP Linux box. Once I did that, my sites were all up and running (albeit from a short time warp) in less than 5 minutes after I hung up the phone.
Anyway, if you’re looking for a hosting provider (or domain registrar), I have been using GoDaddy for years and have been impressed with every part of their service. You can find horror stories for every hosting company online but from my personal experience, I’m proud to say that not only have I benefited from being a GoDaddy customer, but I’ve also been handsomely rewarded for being an affiliate (see my disclosure).
If you’ve ever been hacked, I’d love to hear your story.

Ya lol. Godaddys too easy to hack though.

Hard to justify a dedicated server for most folks. Going from ~$80/yr to ~$80/mo is a big jump.
Godaddy services have received many negative feedback recently, it is difficult for people to believe in such vulnerable host.

GoDaddy isn’t perfect but my experience has been very positive, even in the event of a negative incident. I give a lot of weight on how a company helps me handle a problem, regardless of whether or not it was truly preventable.
I’ve relived one of my experiences when reading your post heh.
Back when I was using another hosting provider, my FTP was hacked and all of my websites were flooded with thousands of links towards ugly and illegal websites, almost impossible to remove manually. Despite the fact that I managed resolving the issue, I moved to GoDaddy and I must say I am ‘very’ happy with their services. Once you get accustomed with their system, GoDaddy will most likely be anyone’s #1, I have a few good years with them.

Also, I forgot to mention that so far I haven’t made any manual backups of my WP, even though my host does that already, I’m going to start backing up periodically, both files and databases.
Even though I have my own backups, I pray I will never have to use them. They’re my contingency plans’ contingency plan.
我觉得确实是这样的,写的不错。
This is a very nice feedback on GoDaddy. Can you tell me though, if there’s any difference between shared hosting and dedicated server or VPS regarding chances of your website being hacked?

Hey, I’m not a professional hacker so I’m not qualified to provide you with that answer.
That said, from my experience, all servers are vulnerable to a degree and a one variable that shouldn’t be discounted is how secure your own passwords are.
As i am aware of, sharing hosting is a webhost that you use with millions of people, so you share the host with them, it is more easier to hack, this is why the price is more affordable.
VPS and dedicated server is like you own your webhost yourself and you don’t share with anyone else, the price is more expensive
but more “safe”.

Yes, I know about the expensive price of other options, and the problem is, I am not good in these technical issues but as a site owner, I need to find out on these matters. From my impression, if many sites from different owners are hosted on one server, they all can be vulnerable if a single virus gets to that server. But on the other hand, if you’re not experienced admin, even with dedicated server you can get viruses on your sites.
So in any case this article is a very good reminder of backups, as most people like to learn when it’s already too late

Godaddy gets a lot of heat for various things, but it’s in the nature of these kinds of shared hosting services to be more vulnerable. People alternately curse and swear by just about any of them. That’s certainly my experience with Bluehost.

There’s a handful of big names out there, GoDaddy and BlueHost obviously being two of them. The bigger they are, the more complaints we can find.
Honestly, I would say half the time we have a legitimate complaint but I find that the other half, the user has unrealistic expectations.
I have had this happen to me only once. It was awful. I have use Go Daddy for several years and you are right, they helped me through a time I thought was going to put me down for some time. I am glad that they are as helpful as they are. This is the kind of service everyone should give.
Congrats on getting it fixed! I HATE folks who hack into sites, I really do.

I guess none of webhosting is perfect.
It is horrible to be hacked, and i hope it won’t happen to you again, Gabe.
So glad to see your site alive again.
Cheers.

I look at it as inevitable. As long as I can get back up and running with very little pain, I’m thrilled!
Well i do use godaddy for all my domain registrations, but their hosting, at least the shared one is definitely something i wont try. I guess you are not a fan off nodaddy.com

I think everyone who is using computer in any form for at least a year must have faced the virus/malware issue…It’s always wise to install a antivirus. Prevention is better than cure.
That’s a pretty scary experience. I didn’t know GoDaddy has backups for the last 30 days. That sure saved you time and money. I might have to switch.
And they have Danica and other to look at on their site. That’s a plus.

No one perfect, include GoDaddy…
It is unavoidable I guess. Almost everyone will come to experience that so just be ready all the time and do the necessary action. I haven’t tried godaddy but will try this out soon.
As long as I can get back up and running with very little pain.
i don’t use godaddy but it is one of the host servers i gladly recommend to others. i use 1and1 and alentus. i’ve also used some others i won’t name. these 3 host servers provide excellent customer service. alentus backs up your site every day. when you have problems you can’t trade this type of service for another host server that was free or costs a 1.00 a month.
wow..really awesome..
threats and viruses are the Major threat of our technology..
i hopr go daddy will help to sort out some of these problems
Yes, my experiences at GoDaddy were less than, let’s say, remarkable. Glad to hear yours were different!
Godaddy is really a great option to rescue from viruses attacks…
i will surely give it a try……….
mm.. godaddy is nice posting..
I also use Godaddy, but as a domain registrar and not as a web host. It;s great that they’ve been able to help you with your problem Gabe, but the fact that it has been infected with malware just points to its security issues. That was NOT supposed to happen and it’s their fault!

Yes.. It was a good news.. Because GoDaddy have more fans and fans are waiting for this day..

Hi – really great web site you have established. I had fun reading this posting. I had an urge to publish a remark to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically sweet. I used to be a website designer, now I am a simple employee for a big corporation. I have always enjoyed playing with computing machines and am attempting to learn computer code in my free time (which there is never enough of lol).
nice blog and thanks for this useful information:-)
Thanks for sharingdw
Recently, one of my shared servers over at DreamHost was DDOS attacked (not my site, but another 1 in the server). I’m thinking of moving to a VPS or dedicated server because of that.
I have to say, I dont know if its the clashing colours or the dangerous grammar, however this weblog is hideous!

I have been used Godaddy for the past two year and it works good to me. I would choose it again if I need to use any server again. Actually I agree most of your points here.
