Doesn't matter which one you pick, you still lose.
Back in the day, say 1999 (10 years ago already!), hits were the big thing. Hit counters were still on those hideous home pages, often times right under the super-fancy, obligatory ‘under construction’ animated gif.
So glad the internet evolution moved quickly out of that era! Anyway, even though we don’t see hit counters much anymore, we still see the word hit being used. A term we see a lot more of these days is pageview. Is that the new term for hit? No, it actually means something entirely different.
As a blogger, it’s important for you to know the difference between the two. When you check your reports, server stats, rankings and other diagnostic tools, don’t you think it’s kind of important to know what you’re actually looking at?
Here are basic definitions in my words:
Hit: A file sent to a browser by a web server.
Pageview: A page “viewed” by a visitor.
Still confused? Let’s say you go to a single web page with a video and five pictures. That’s seven hits (one for the html file, one for the video and one for each picture). It’s also one pageview. So what’s a better metric?
Winner: Pageviews
Pageviews are more relevant since it’s much more reliable. A visitor looking a page could have 100 pictures on it, or 101 hits, and still be counted as a single pageview. If we used hits as a measuring stick, that would skew the data, wouldn’t it? That’s why Alexa uses pageviews, not hits.
The irony is that hit counters don’t actually record hits; rather, they record visitors…or did they record visits? Tomorrow’s battle, visits vs. visitors! (And why hit counters were always utterly useless.)

It doesn’t really seem like the number of ‘hits’ a page gets is in any way an important measurement of the amount of traffic to that site.

“Alexa uses pageviews”
I read somewhere that people who install Alexa’s toolbar get better site rankings. If what you’re saying about Alexa is correct, I’m guessing the reason their sites’ rank better is because of all the pageviews they give their own sites when they add content to and work on them…

Many bloggers still confuse hits with pageviews. They think that the stats in their Cpanel are meant for visits, and this will ruin all their efforts. I like to use Google Analytics to do the job as it’s more accurate. Thanks for mentioning

In most cases the page views you need amount to more than your hosting account can handle, so just when things start looking good, you need to upgrade your hosting account to a more expensive one, which eats your adsense profit and more… and then again, when you move up to a dedicated server.

I think that hits count more for ads (pay per click), and pageviews for the actual traffic. Hm…does anyone agree?

I used to go for the hits. It gives a better feeling but then I know that I am deceiving myself. It doesn’t really mean much. Pageview is more relevant. I also look at unique visitors.

It is not really rocket-science that hit count are a kind of ancient and useless. But the same counts for pageviews as long you don’t pay attention to the actual time visitors stay on a page.
Most webmaster are proud on their page-views but if your average 30 seconds, you either have no content to read or people get bored and go away again very quick.
