Another guest post today, this time from Cebu Tech Blogger, Bert Padilla.
Most bloggers are using the very popular webmaster tool called Google Trends. With Google Trends, you can see how frequently a particular topic appeared on Google and what other topics internet users are searching and viewing on the web.
On this article, I will share you something most bloggers (particularly beginners) doesn’t know how to drive organic traffic to their blogs with the use of Google Trends and the proper Search Engine Optimization (SEO). So here we go…
1. Use a High-Trend but Low-Dense Keywords
When you use a high-trend, but low-dense targeted keywords- you have a great chance to top on the SERP for that particular keyword especially if you have a higher PR than those other blogs with similar targeted keywords as yours. One example of high-trending keyword this year is “Photas”. Take a look at this graph. Now you come to ask, how “Photas” become a less-dense keyword. Well, searching for that particularly keyword only returns few results. When I say few, it doesn’t reach 500K or even 100K results like this.
2. Apply the Proper SEO
There are so many SEO techniques we can apply to optimize blog posts. But what I can suggest when using Google Trends is just to use proper keyword combination and link building. Doing these two optimization techniques would really boost your organic traffic.
For the best keyword combination, you need to research what other keywords are associated with your first keyword identified on no. 1 above. For example, “Photas” has something to do with FB and a computer virus. You can then formulate a title for the blog post. Let’s say, “Facebook Photas is a Virus”.
Remember that the other two keywords on the formulated title are not low-dense. Searching for those keywords individually will return you millions of results. So, your only best shot is to optimize the first identified keyword on no. 1. Here comes the second SEO technique to use- the Link Building. For the link building, try to get at least 5 back links with your targeted keyword as anchor text. Only five back links as most SEO experts believe that creating many back links with same anchor text is not SE friendly anymore. Don’t use your post title as the anchor text. If you use a combination of two keywords, just make it natural.
I have proven this myself, and it is really working. Just spend some time to try it. I’ll be glad if this will also work for you. – END

I personally use Google Trends to figure out what specific keywords to be targeted with less competition. Though this doesn’t happen always as I’m also utilizing the “Hot Topics” and “Hot Searches”, in which the targeted keywords absolutely return millions of results- but still will drive additional traffic to your blog.

@Tinh: Sometimes choosing high-trend and high-density keywords really works especially if you have a wide readers or subscribers. But if you will just rely from SERP, it’s a bit harder as you are going to compete those other blogs of the same niche. I realized it’s better just to find keywords that are high-trend but low-dense as explained above.
@elmot: Thanks, dude… Like what I’ve replied to Joella, it’s better to be straight-forward of what you are trying to say.

Nice. That’s pretty helpful. It will take some creativity to make those hot topics blend well in our blogs sure, but I’m willing to try. We write for readers. Might as well give them what they’re dying to read about anyway.
You’re so right. Some days, using trend topics are a real reach. You can always get creative though.
For example, today’s top 10 in the US includes super mario galaxy 2. If I really wanted to I can turn that article into how playing that game is like blogging.
Hmm I haven’t tried Google trends before but now seems like a good time to start. I have heard that the best bloggers use long-tail keywords in all their articles and don’t really care about density. I have learned that, either way, its best to just write for your readers and forget about SEO.

Hi Gabe,
I have been reading your blog and felt like its time for me to make a comment. I like the idea of looking at trends to find keywords that you could get ranking for. I like how you suggest spinning a keyword into something that makes sense for your blog. “playing that game is like blogging”.
I have been doing some experimenting myself. I have been using Google keyword tool and trying to find high volume and low completion key phrases. I have to admit this is time consuming. Although it does work.
I will give trends a try, you never know what will happen.

You have a good point regarding Yahoo! Directory! And DMOZ, for that matter. I really think webdirectories are outdated nowadays. They’re too expensive and there is practically no benefit to gain. You only get 1 link in a directory which isn’t visited a lot.
And well… DMOZ. It’s been ages since a website I submitted actually got approved. What do you think, Gabe?
Hi, well said cabu you did such a grate work here. Keywords and content is work as a magnet for visitors, they both are really useful for blogs or site’s promotion. But as you told us about only keywords so my thought is that Keywords are not a license to spill, using too many keywords or using them too often is the best way to loose customers and be kicked out by search engines. The best way to raise your SERPs is to research, plan and place your keywords carefully.
Thanks again, i have ever heard of Google Trends but didn’t know its function,.. ^^’
