Those of you who have tried Google AdSense (let’s face it, who hasn’t?) had to make an important decision at one point — “Should I go with an all text ad or an image ad?” Ironically, many people start by letting Google choose by simply selecting the ‘Text and image ads’, which is the default setting. Is that bad?
Well, yes and no. I get asked that question from time to time and it really all depends. If you do a little research on what has been successful for others, you’ll find a mixed bag. For instance, some say that text ads are more effective because they blend into the rest of the site. Conversely, others claim that image ads bring in more revenue since they are more visually appealing.
Let’s look at some of their pros and cons:
Text ads
Pros
- Can be configured to blend in with the site content
- Almost all advertisers have text ads available
- Take up minimal space per advertiser, leading to more per ad block
Cons
- Looks very bland and generic
Image ads
Pros
- Can be visually attractive
- Are larger and easier to see
- Can tell a story through basic animation
Cons
- Fewer advertisers can be displayed since one image could replace up to five text ads
- Some visitors are “blind” to image ads (they have been conditioned to ignore banners)
- Can limit the number of advertisers since not everyone has an image ad
One way to determine whether text or image ads would be better is simply looking at your market. Niches in glamorous industries would benefit from sexier ads, where image ads excel. Conversely, blogs that focus on topics that visitors just want to read through quickly, text ads are probably more appropriate. Below are some examples of categories where one type of ad may have an advantage over the other type are:
Text Ads: Business, Science, Careers, Politics, Self-Help, Making Money, Health, Educational
Image Ads: Gaming, Sports and Fitness, Music, Movies, TV, Fashion, Arts, Celebrity News
Text and/or Image Ads: Technology, Auto, Pets, Food and Drink
By no means are the aforementioned gospel but it gives you a starting point. You may have a micro-niche that bucks the trend.
In short, the question of text vs. image doesn’t have a clear cut answer. It really depends on what type of site you have, what you’re trying to accomplish with the ads, and who your audience is. Personally, for Google AdSense, I prefer text ads because I already have sponsors with image links throughout the page. I choose to display text ads with a look and feel that’s similar to the rest of the site. Although that has worked well for me, I may still use an image ad from time to time, just to test its effectiveness. Like all other moneymaking tactics, a lot of trial and error is involved. Experiment to see which works better for you.

I think image ads are better then link ads. As link ads while they have more advertisers per space it also means they can have a lower cost since they are in a generally smaller space.
Image ads only allow 1 publisher per ad which means it weeds out the low paying ones since you have to design a image/video and it draws attention to then since they move.
Plus text+text ads is bad since it can lead to a wall of text.
So on my site I choose image/video over text for its higher payments, and its interactivity.
Thanks for the share Gabe. I was also intrigued as to which ads (image vs. text ads) have higher CPC rates. Some forums I visited say that image has higher CPC rate because the space they occupy is equivalent to 3 or 4 text ads.

Great points, Brad. Depending on what type of blog you’re running, one may favor one over the other. It’s really going to take some trial and error for most bloggers. Glad your image ads are working for you though!
I guess I was wrong. While banner ads are CPM I only get maybe oh $0.02 for 3 ads on my website…no help.
So I have switched back to text. While ad clicks are rare (lets face it my blogs new who knows about it). The payout is usually $1-2 which is very nice if you manage to get a click here and there
.
I’ve had similar results. Although I have affiliate image ads, when it comes to Google AdSense, I stick with text. I find that’s the best balance for me right now.
I want an extended version of this for a guest post! Please!

Anyhow, since my niche is more of business, I guess I would remain to leaning more towards text ads.

For a blog like yours, I would think text ads would be better than image ads. Then again, you never know until you try both at some point. I think everyone has to experiment at least a little just to be certain.
I think it’s also important to note that image ads may perform better at certain hours than text, and vice versa. Another point is that a younger audience may be more drawn to image ads while and older crowd might be more comfortable with text ads. These are just theories, but things we should consider when planning our ad space! Thanks for the great article.

I had looked around for several blogs that would show me what your blog ultimately have. Your blog was by far the best blog for the information because of its simplicity and easy to comprehend. Thank you for sharing!
I go for image ads
I go by the logic that since image ads take up more space, then the advertiser ought to be paying more. Don’t kid yourself that visitors will click your text ads one after another because they don’t. Works for me.
actually, since the same space is split and sold as pieces to advertisers in text ads. it would be logical to assume the total sum value would be higher.
I hate most image ads because they are so tacky!!
i prefer image adds . .

I have been running my website http://www.gameparadise.freehostia.com for an almost a year. I tried image and text ads but through this period of time I only had earned almost 13 dollars which is not a success, so now I have changed all my ad slots to only image ads, let’s see how beneficial it would be.
I get 800 views for my website homepage per day.
What do you guys think, will this tactic work for me?
Try to look at your ad placement and you can try to rotate ad colors by using different palette. It can be improved then

I think Image and text ads are a good combination if you have an audience which ranges in ages and genders since younger people might like to click on flashy well designed ads, but older people might want to click on text links. Plus, picture ads can sometimes tell a better story about what the ad is about compared to text.

I am now using text only option as text ads seem to appear more targeted. Banners shout ads and users avoid clicking them.

Yes, I am also using text ads. I think text ads generate more click than image ads.
I agree, there’s not a clear cut answer on what to use. One will have to test them out and see which one performs betters.
For example…
On my blog, in my sidebar, I have a 160px wide skyscraper banner that rotates between text and image ads. Last month, the text version gave me 4 clicks and made me less than half a buck, while image ad made me $5.5 from 19 clicks. This month, so far, I had 6 clicks on the image and made $3 and 9 clicks on the text and gave me $1.5.
So in my case, it would seem that I make more money by using an image ad instead of text, so maybe I’ll switch to that one full-time.

you are right, I remembered that Google has harmonised all types of ad unit and format and concluded that 300×250 and 336×280 worked best and they also recommened to use both text and image. More unit to use, more ads to come and more money to be generated.

I must say that It was a great article. Its very interesting and logical post also. I never thought about this for my blog but from now I will be thinking. I generally select image and text both. Anyways thanks for sharing.
I think both is good, though text ads are more likely to convert than image ads, especially when placed within content. And it also shows through your given pros and cons that placing image ads has more disadvantages. Text ads may seem to look generic and dull but they’re effective

This is all very true. I have found it difficult to make a living off of just adsense. I like to mix it up. They do not make what I want either but, I will keep trying.
No one can make a killing off Adsense anymore but it can still be a nice supplement.
Actually when i visit any site, i never click on image ads. So i think my read will not feel comfortable to click on image ads. So i prefer text ads
Gabe,
I think you ideas about combining together the site’s main market with the adsense type make as good of a blueprint as I have heard; Quote:
Text Ads: Business, Science, Careers, Politics, Self-Help, Making Money, Health, Educational
Image Ads: Gaming, Sports and Fitness, Music, Movies, TV, Fashion, Arts, Celebrity News
Text and/or Image Ads: Technology, Auto, Pets, Food and Drink
Thanks for the input, always good info as usual.

I’ve played around with both text, image, or a mix of both for a health related blog niche. My CTR on text ads is almost non-existent. I’ve found after tons of experimenting that I get best results with a 728×90 banner ad and 300 x square ad at the top of the sidebar.

I think text ads are better, some people think image ads are annoying. Text ads definitely catches more attention especially if you do a search for a specific thing and you will see a text ad that is catchy.
Just because they are catchy doesnt mean they aren’t insulting to the intelligence of the average consumer. Or maybe im giving too much credit?
We cannot make this comparison because it’s not true. The good or bad of each of units that depending on where is placed to.

I think text ads and image ads is the same its influences. I think location of text ads or image ads on the page more important.
I think both have their own importance using single strategy may not give results as compared by using the combination of both strategies.
