As promised from last week’s blog failure article, here is the second part of the series, factors contributing to blog success.
These factors for success are just the opposite of factors that guarantee failure:
1. People want to read what you write
2. People can find you
3. Your passion for your material shines through every word
The curious thing about these factors for success is that you only need to hit one of them to find at least some success, whereas if you have trouble with any one of the factors for failure, you’re most likely doomed.
Your audience wants to read your writing
Lucky you.
Even better, if you’re a great writer, congratulations.
Sometimes, people will read what you write, just because they have to. But it’s much better when they want to read your writing.
When your audience wants to read your writing they will actively seek you out. Help them find you…
Your audience can find you
Getting in front of your audience is perhaps the easiest thing of all. You can pay for adwords and get practically guaranteed search results.
Whether your visitors stick around to read what you have to say is something totally different, and this is where quality content has the greatest value. Getting that stickiness can be hard… but for the long term, you want to have very high quality content that people will refer back to time and again.
When your visitors stick around, they’re more inclined to bookmark your site, more inclined to tell their friends, and more inclined to subscribe and come back to what you have to say in the future. These are all ways that have long term impact on your readership. Paying for keywords or “gaming” search engines can drive high traffic to your site in the short term, but without quality content, you will have to keep paying.
Your passion is obvious
Passionless prose can be perfectly readable and very useful and informative.
But it’s probably not going to be fun to read.
Frankly, it probably wasn’t much fun to write either!
When you have a real passion for your writing, it will shine through, and you will develop an audience. For example, I’m reading a certain science fiction novel which isn’t really all that good. But the author, bless his heart, is absolutely in love with his creation, and his love and passion for the admittedly beautiful world he is creating ex nihilo really shines. So I continue to read, albeit slowly (I am usually an extremely fast reader), and will purchase the next 4 books in the series.
Will your passion shine through your writing?

Passion and patience is very necessary in blogging. You should understand that blogging is not an easy task.
Patience is certainly one thing I work on constantly!
BTW, Ricky, what happened to your Gravatar?
Definitely not an easy task. Aside from Passion and Patience, I’d like to add another ‘P’. Perseverance. There are times when I feel like dropping one site because of the pressure of maintaining it.

Hi friend,
All three factors you mentioned definitely make a blog to be a successful one. And the third point you mentioned is really needed for a successful blogger. Once we have a passion for blogging, we try to present great content and also man with passion for blogging never give up.
Once the content seems to be great we get regular readers to our blog.

Keith, I completely agree with you. Both of these articles were originally published on my website last April, and neither yet have any comments (IIRC). The difference is exposure. Back then, I had none. Now, I have a lot more!

Promotion is often a step that bloggers don’t realize is a necessary step. The ‘Field of Dreams’ approach (i.e. if you build it, they will come) simple doesn’t work for blogs.
Keith, you’re spot on with your visiting routine. Especially during the first 90 days, an awful lot of time needs to be spent reaching out to other blogs and promoting yourself.
We may also add ” readers can find what they are looking for” in your blog.

Fortunately or unfortunately there is really no “have to” in the blogosphere anymore. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a niche with less the 5000 blogs writing it. lol
Dennis Edell´s last blog ..Again – Pick My New Domain Names With A chance To Win $10!
That’s what sub-niches are for.
For instance, rather than general weight loss, one could go with weight loss for teens. Or instead of gambling tips, one could go with online poker.
I still say you’d have to dig 5-10 subs down to hit something truly unique…..online poker, seriously??
Bad pickin there, Nowadays that’s probably more popular then gambling tips. LOL
Dennis Edell´s last blog ..Again – Pick My New Domain Names With A chance To Win $10!
I don’t think you need to be unique to have a good niche. You’re probably right that online poker might be saturated since I’m no expert in that field but the reality is if one goes any deeper, there would be little to write about.
Anyway, I think we both agree with the main point, which is regardless of what the niche is, being too broad or unfocused hurts.
True, you don’t necessarily have to find a unique niche, but you must be unique within the niche you choose.
OK that tuckered me out. lol

Without passion it’s hard to write good article and without good article it’s hard to get success. Success is really very easy to achieve if you concentrate on quality more than success. You really done a good job in this article. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Having great content in my niche and passion I believe I do have, my writing skills I believe are improving on a daily basis, but admit need much improvement, wish I paid more attention way back in H.S. My blog seems to be bringing in traffic, but no comments, I,m wondering if I am not getting in front of the right people, or just need more patience? I am still only 4 months old, should I be expecting more or is this normal?
You have to really work it. Look back at my early articles. I went nearly 6 months with almost no comments. This article, when it was originally published, didn’t get any comments at all!

Hey Dave. I definitely think passion is one of the things that separates an average blogger to a great blogger. Readers can tell if the writer is writing in a genuine way or writing for the sake of putting posts up. Writer’s make the reader want to read more, just like your wanting to know more from the next series of your current science fiction novel. Great tips here!
Yep. Easier said than done, though.
For example, if you decide to publish daily, it’s all too easy to allow daily publishing get ahead of the writing. That’s when your blog takes charge of you!
Dave Doolin | Website In A Weekend´s last blog ..Whose in Charge Here? You, or your blog?
Hi Dave. Regarding passion, I think it’s not always shining only from the words/writing. It depends on the person because everyone has different personality and background.
For example, I like to write in a simple and straightforward language. You can barely found any colorful or sophisticated words on my articles. Why? Am I not passionate in what I do? I am passionate, I’m just not a native user of English. So if someone tries to measure my passion through my words, it won’t be very accurate
I can hear passion in your writing here. Just do what you do, I think you’ll be fine.

In my opinion, the most important factor in a blog’s success is that it can easily be found by its target readers. Not just any readers, but its target readers so there will be more chances of creating a group of regular blog followers.
