How many of you think you’re doing an adequate job of SEO? I’m guessing about half of you said yes. However, even if you’re in that group, I’d bet there are tasks that you’re performing that are either wasting your time or even worse, damaging your long-term SEO goals!
Because so many of us are self-taught SEO implementers (let’s face it, very few of us have worked as an SEO professional), we obtained our search engine optimization education through a combination of reading online articles from so called “experts” and through personal trial and error.
From a professional level, I’ve moved on to other things but my experience working as an SEO strategist over ten years ago has given me a foundation that will never change. No matter how much SEO has evolved over the years, there’s a deep-rooted core that will always stay the same.
So let’s take a look at these common SEO mistakes. Some you may know already but there might be a few that you’re doing that you should probably consider stopping (or, in some cases, undoing)!
5 SEO mistakes to avoid
- Backlinks from unrelated content – We all know that having quality backlinks is a great way tell search engines what kind of site we are. The PageRank boost doesn’t hurt either. That said, if your backlinks are coming from pages that have nothing to do with your content, you will be hurting yourself.
- Backlinks from bad sources – Not all backlinks are created equal and in some cases, they may earn you the dreaded ‘black list’ label. Don’t try to cheat the system by exchanging backlinks with just anyone. And I would also recommend against buying backlinks.
- Backlinks with over-indulgent anchor text –Backlinks to your site with the same anchor text over and over will raise a red flag. Besides, no matter how hard you try, using a niche anchor text like “SEO” won’t help you at this rate anyway. Switch it up and use other keywords in your anchor text to describe your site’s content.
- Keyword stuffing – You know what this is. If you’ve taken keywords and phrases an OCD-level, knock it off! Your short-term gains will earn you long-term SERP penalties. It’s OK to use the proper keywords in a readable manner and even working in an occasional sub-niche keyword but please don’t overdo it. When in doubt, it’s easy – just think about your reader.
- Over-formatting – I’m a big fan of using bold and italics (please try to refrain from underlines all together since they can be confused with links) but only use them when it makes sense to highlight the appropriate words. Keep these to a minimum to so that when you actually format your text, they really stand out.
Bear in mind that not doing these does not mean your site is search engine optimized well. However, it will keep you on par with others who are not committing these SEO faux pas. I guess not doing something bad can be viewed as good, right?
How many of these mistakes have you made, either currently or in the past?

Hmm, I couldn’t agree more with that Gabe. I’m starting to think of making links with nofollow attributes, but I make sure that it’s very relevant to the destination page, since it looks more organic once search engines starts gathering all of your links. It would look suspicious if all links pointing to your site are dofollow, argh off page SEO is very tricky , but that’s what makes me enjoy it the most

I try to be pretty organic about it as well.
If links from bad sources was that damaging, you could get a bunch and point them at your competitors. Almost never works. Now linking TO bad neighbourhoods is a fast track to page 10 of the Google results, but inbound links, sure, try and keep them clean, but don’t lose too much sleep over it.

I just love do follow blogs as although no follow blogs helps prevention from spammers but it also leads to penalization of the honest commenter who has no intentions of spamming. Do follow blog commenting services provide SEO benefits. Along with providing immediate search engine ranking benefits like dropping comments on the do follow blog, it also provides a lot of long term benefits wherein it enables you to leave thought provoking comments and help you connect with the millions of blogger and enable to build your links directly. SEO is not easy to master. I believe the key to success in SEO is to follow the basic rule in making your way through the Search Engines such as using keywords properly(not overstuffing), and use backlinks that are related to your site.
keyword stuffing is a fine line, but you are right the long term penalties aren’t worth it, content and back-links are much more valuable.
Im not sure. But i dont think its bad to have a backlink from a pager 8 even if he is not in ur category.

I’m not that technical about it, the only important thing is to use the targeted keyword once and keep the content relevant to that targeted keyphrase, no need to stick with science, just make sure that readers will enjoy reading it.
First 4 points seems familiar but i didn’t know if over-formatting of a page too hurt rankings for SEO!

what are the importance of paid backlinks.
I agree with 4 points out of the 5 points you’ve made but I guess point no. 1 is very much debatable, no one has a definite answer about whether linking to non-relevant sites is really bad or good. I am not sure if there’s any official documentation from Google or any other search engine regarding how they treat backlinks from non-relevant sites…but I have one more point to add, a lot of people are after dofollow sites. No doubt dofollow sites help a lot but it’s important to have a mix campaign and also have nofollow sites in your link building campaign to make them look more natural.

5 advices worth a pound of gold, thank you! You’re being a look-alike of Tiger Woods (with or without cap) works to your disadvantage now
It may or may not be related to your content *wink*

Thanks for sharingdwre
Interesting article! However I have had my horizond broadened (and pocket lightened) by clicking on links to largely unrelated sites from a page. I’m not sure whether there is a right or wrong answer here… maybe if the non-directly relevent links were somehow highlighted as such? Is that possible?

I agree quality over quantity, weak blogs with little or no relevancy doesn’t appear to do any good whatsoever, and rightly so ! , good content, fresh content, is always King !
I don’t have many niche sites to comment
