Blogging can be such a humbling experience.
When bloggers first start out, many think that posting articles is all they have to do. Within a few short weeks, they quickly realize they have an audience of one and it’ll stay that way until something changes.
So they get their own domain and hosting, start learning as much as they can about their niche, improve their writing, get a new theme, promote their site, try to get backlinks, research plugins, tie their posts together, and build a brand identity (among other things). And that doesn’t even include monetizing the site!
With so many moving parts, how can you measure your overall progress? Of course, there’s the typical Alexa ranking and Google PageRank so you can examine your traffic and popularity progress. But what about the plethora of other intricate details of your site?
The Website Grader tool is one great way to get a score for your site.
HubSpot’s Website Grader is FREE!
I know, a free tool; how powerful can that be? Let’s take a look.
The Website Grader looks at many parts of your blog to determine how you’re doing. The top level categories of how your site is being judged are:
- On-Page SEO – design and structure of the site
- Off-Page SEO – promotional and linking activities
- Blogsphere – marketing and interaction
- Social Mediasphere – bookmarking presense
- Converting Qualified Visitors to Leads – feeds and forms
- Competitive Intelligence – compares your site with competing sites
Sounds pretty comprehensive, right? That’s because it is! Over 50 variables are factored in.
At the end of the assessment, which takes all of 10 seconds or so, you get a grade!
The “grade” represents the percentage of sites the Website Grader thinks you’re better than. So a score of 50 means that your site ranks better than half the sites it has graded.
Uncover and improve
In addition to the grade, the Website Grader will also identify areas where you could use improvement. This is where you can either work on them yourself or use one of their services.
The great thing about it is that many bloggers don’t realize how many things they miss when trying to develop a site. Use this tool to see where the holes are and start filling them. Essentially, you do your best, get a score, make improvements, get a score again. Rinse and repeat.
Don’t get me wrong, this tool is just one way to assess a site. There are many other factors that it cannot determine through a quick scan, like sense of community, usability, quality and usefulness of the content, stickiness, and branding … just to name a few.
Free Blog Help’s grade
OK, I’m going to try to not be immodest here. Sure, I love my grade but trust me, it wasn’t always this high. In fact, I’m sure many of you have better grades than I do.
When Website Grader gave me my grade several months ago, I wasn’t happy with my score at all (if I recall correctly, it was an 83). Even someone who’s been in the business for many years like myself had a lot to work on to bring the grade up. The reason why I’m even showing you my grade is because I’m proof that making adjustments can make your site a lot better.
It doesn’t mean that this site is perfect but it does show that I’m making progress. Even the climb from 99.1 to 99.2 will be steep since everyone at this level is trying pretty hard.
I have a pile of work ahead of me but at least I know which areas to focus my attention on.
Anyway, head over to Website Grader and type in your blog address. I would love it if you’d be willing to share your grade with us.

Congrats! That’s very high considering how new your site is.
Gabe,
Wow! This is really cool. I’ve never heard of this until I read this article.
My blog grade is: 49; my website grade is: 74.
Interesting… Will definitely be improving my blog with time.
Thanks a bunch for this great tip!
Keep at it!

Eric´s last blog ..The Most Money You’ll Ever Make With Your Blog
That’s lower than I would expect. Your blog looks great. Very, very clean and easy to read. I’m going to run yours through again and see the results, I’m curious why it rates so low. I’m assuming link backs and traffic must be low.
Either way, keep up the quality content and “make some noise”! I think your blog is fantastic.

Jake´s last blog ..Hosting Transfer and Errors
Jake,
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I’m not sure about all the ranking and such out there. I’m just working hard to make things clean, easy to follow and friendly for anyone who comes across my site and also working to make it informative and useful.
I guess as time goes on things will improve as I am always looking at improvement being a goal of mine as well.
Your blog looks good. I like the design. It’s easy on the eyes and has some good information.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Eric, you’re doing a great job building a foundation for long-term success. Taking just a small step every few days is more than enough.
Gabe,
I couldn’t have said that better myself. That’s what it takes.
Great job with your site as well!

I was going to say it must’ve gotten hung up. The evaluation process should only take a handful of seconds. Congrats on the 97!
Thanks for pointing out to a great tool! I got a score of 93% So, I’m off now, and out improving some more

97.3%! But I make next to nothing from my site so who is to say one site is better than another?
Evan´s last blog ..Studying the Obvious and Figuring Out Why Americans Are Broke
It’s not saying whether your site is great or terrible. It’s just evaluating how well you’re doing when it comes to SEO/promotion. How you choose to monetize it is another story all together.
awww just read the report – my site is 97.3% but my blog is 49% OUCH
Evan´s last blog ..Studying the Obvious and Figuring Out Why Americans Are Broke
I scored 96, although I’m not really sure how accurate that thing is! I mean, it doesn’t factor how enjoyable the content is, comment count etc.
Still, it’s nice to get a high score :p

True, and we don’t want it to judge those things. We have our visitors for that.
Where this comes in handy is the backend and promotional stuff…parts of our site that are hard to measure.
96.6 not bad.
Got marked down for too many keywords…noted!
Blog got 50. Apparently it thinks I am still hosted at blogger and got marked down heavily for that.
Good to see how my blog stands

Brad´s last blog ..Top 5 myths about Google
I think everyone gets their wrist slapped for too many keywords. I mean, when we first drop those in there, we can’t help but put as many as we can think of, right?
Indeed, although all in one SEO pack only puts that for my home page, the posts are fine, so I really have nothing much to worry about since Google ignores them.
Brad´s last blog ..Apple Opens Up Haiti Donations Via iTunes
Thanks Gabe, this is cool.
Ok, ran the grader and got a 90; I just finished revamping my blog so I must be doing something right. The results also said I have too many images, lol.
Anyway, I like that I can see upfront, and very quickly, how things really are, and where there’s room for improvement. Now, to get to work on that 91 score..
Indeed, great advice for sharing and reminding people to look at their HubSpot grade, even if ranking systems are not entirely accurate. If you visit HubSpot’s office, you’ll see some large-screen monitors showing the websites (or Twitter names, if you use that grading tool, too) being ranked in real-time. There are many every second.
I’m showing a 99.1 right now, but because I’m ranking a blog, and not a website, some of its errors don’t apply.
Ari Herzog´s last blog ..Commenter or Lurker: Which Blog Participant Are You?
Just like most online metrics, the Website Grader is simply another way to measure a site. By no means would any single source be used determine a site’s success, even Google PR.
I got a 96 which I am shocked by since my site is only a month old! I have used this tool before but never got over a 90 so I am thrilled!

Thanks Gabe!

Although it may be good in some areas, like those being graded with this tool, I certainly have a lot to work on in others.
For instance, I might considering making some adjustments for PR, something I’ve never had the urge to do until recently.
My score was like 94% I’m okay with that. An area I need to improve on is my Meta Keywords. I have upwards of 200 that site recommended 10 or less to minimize the dilution of primary keywords.

You’re the only one with this problem. Strange. I guess we’ll have to chalk it up as user error.
Glad you fixed it though.

My website grade was 93(which I believe is thanks to using Joomla), my blog was 83. The one thing I don’t understand is why it shows my last blog post being 5 November, seeing how I had a dozen posts since then. Another thing about it I don’t agree with is it’s 70 character page title recommendation. I have 96 but it is definitely helping with my positioning within the search engines. I’m hesitant to change that.

The grading system isn’t perfect but it does give us a great idea of where to fine-tune our sites.
I don’t agree with everything there either, like Yahoo! directory, which is a ridiculous cost ($300/yr.) for very little value.
My blog grade is: 90. Lot to improve
Basant Singh´s last blog ..Translate Simplified Chinese Blog/Website to English
Oh thanks a lot for this help , I want to check it for my site also.
My site grade is 96.1
I’ve used this tool to check my site ranking before, but been stopped using for quite some times. I’ve done a check just now and got my ranking at 98.7 something, I used to have 99.7 in the past, the score drops now. I believe that it has something to do with the inbound link, that was weird because it kept changing before, that was one of the reasons that I stopped using it.
Anyway, that’s still a good tool to check everything for our blog, at least we know something about our blog.
Best Regards,
Lee
We all know that the tool isn’t perfect. It’s a good gauge and as long as you’re in the high 90’s, you have nothing to worry about. For the most part, you know that your site isn’t “broken”.
very helpfull to know about my website
Thanks for infoo..
Hi,
Thanks for the link to the free grader tool. I have been wanting to get my blog analysed. I scored 62% which I consider very poor.
