Blogging can be such a humbling experience.
When bloggers first start out, many think that posting articles is all they have to do. Within a few short weeks, they quickly realize they have an audience of one and it’ll stay that way until something changes.
So they get their own domain and hosting, start learning as much as they can about their niche, improve their writing, get a new theme, promote their site, try to get backlinks, research plugins, tie their posts together, and build a brand identity (among other things). And that doesn’t even include monetizing the site!
With so many moving parts, how can you measure your overall progress? Of course, there’s the typical Alexa ranking and Google PageRank so you can examine your traffic and popularity progress. But what about the plethora of other intricate details of your site?
The Website Grader tool is one great way to get a score for your site.
HubSpot’s Website Grader is FREE!
I know, a free tool; how powerful can that be? Let’s take a look.
The Website Grader looks at many parts of your blog to determine how you’re doing. The top level categories of how your site is being judged are:
- On-Page SEO – design and structure of the site
- Off-Page SEO – promotional and linking activities
- Blogsphere – marketing and interaction
- Social Mediasphere – bookmarking presense
- Converting Qualified Visitors to Leads – feeds and forms
- Competitive Intelligence – compares your site with competing sites
Sounds pretty comprehensive, right? That’s because it is! Over 50 variables are factored in.
At the end of the assessment, which takes all of 10 seconds or so, you get a grade!
The “grade” represents the percentage of sites the Website Grader thinks you’re better than. So a score of 50 means that your site ranks better than half the sites it has graded.
Uncover and improve
In addition to the grade, the Website Grader will also identify areas where you could use improvement. This is where you can either work on them yourself or use one of their services.
The great thing about it is that many bloggers don’t realize how many things they miss when trying to develop a site. Use this tool to see where the holes are and start filling them. Essentially, you do your best, get a score, make improvements, get a score again. Rinse and repeat.
Don’t get me wrong, this tool is just one way to assess a site. There are many other factors that it cannot determine through a quick scan, like sense of community, usability, quality and usefulness of the content, stickiness, and branding … just to name a few.
Free Blog Help’s grade
OK, I’m going to try to not be immodest here. Sure, I love my grade but trust me, it wasn’t always this high. In fact, I’m sure many of you have better grades than I do.
When Website Grader gave me my grade several months ago, I wasn’t happy with my score at all (if I recall correctly, it was an 83). Even someone who’s been in the business for many years like myself had a lot to work on to bring the grade up. The reason why I’m even showing you my grade is because I’m proof that making adjustments can make your site a lot better.
It doesn’t mean that this site is perfect but it does show that I’m making progress. Even the climb from 99.1 to 99.2 will be steep since everyone at this level is trying pretty hard.
I have a pile of work ahead of me but at least I know which areas to focus my attention on.
Anyway, head over to Website Grader and type in your blog address. I would love it if you’d be willing to share your grade with us.

Indeed, although all in one SEO pack only puts that for my home page, the posts are fine, so I really have nothing much to worry about since Google ignores them.

Just like most online metrics, the Website Grader is simply another way to measure a site. By no means would any single source be used determine a site’s success, even Google PR.
My grade is 95.8
But I am happy that I used this tool because I found some important things which I need to correct. My Meta Description for the home page is very long which need to be cut down. And I need to renew my domain name too which is going to expire in next 7 months.
Thanks Gabe!

Just a few minor tweaks should help a bit. Glad you’re able to immediately identify the areas that could use some strengthening.
Scored a 90/100. Pretty useful information about my site. I was able to fix some left out info. that Hubspot pointed out was missing. Congratulations on the near perfect score!

Although it may be good in some areas, like those being graded with this tool, I certainly have a lot to work on in others.
For instance, I might considering making some adjustments for PR, something I’ve never had the urge to do until recently.
My score was like 94% I’m okay with that. An area I need to improve on is my Meta Keywords. I have upwards of 200 that site recommended 10 or less to minimize the dilution of primary keywords.

Oh crap, thanks a lot; I knew I shouldn’t do it. I’ve procrastinated so long on this blog move and am finally ready to go in a couple days, literally, and now you have me go and find a 97.9%!

You’re the only one with this problem. Strange. I guess we’ll have to chalk it up as user error.
Glad you fixed it though.
You’d think I’d remember writing something like that in the name field. lol

My website grade was 93(which I believe is thanks to using Joomla), my blog was 83. The one thing I don’t understand is why it shows my last blog post being 5 November, seeing how I had a dozen posts since then. Another thing about it I don’t agree with is it’s 70 character page title recommendation. I have 96 but it is definitely helping with my positioning within the search engines. I’m hesitant to change that.

The grading system isn’t perfect but it does give us a great idea of where to fine-tune our sites.
I don’t agree with everything there either, like Yahoo! directory, which is a ridiculous cost ($300/yr.) for very little value.
My blog grade is: 90. Lot to improve

My site grade is 96.1
Oh thanks a lot for this help , I want to check it for my site also.
I’ve used this tool to check my site ranking before, but been stopped using for quite some times. I’ve done a check just now and got my ranking at 98.7 something, I used to have 99.7 in the past, the score drops now. I believe that it has something to do with the inbound link, that was weird because it kept changing before, that was one of the reasons that I stopped using it.
Anyway, that’s still a good tool to check everything for our blog, at least we know something about our blog.
Best Regards,
Lee
We all know that the tool isn’t perfect. It’s a good gauge and as long as you’re in the high 90′s, you have nothing to worry about. For the most part, you know that your site isn’t “broken”.
very helpfull to know about my website
Thanks for infoo..

Maybe a complimentary point of view or an example of how you used the points in the post – anything that will be seen as adding value has a better chance of being accepted than something lame like “thanks for posting, that was a great read”.
