How many articles have you written on your blog? 50? 100? 500?
OK, how many are on currently viewable on your home page? 5? 10?
So what happens to all the ones that are no longer on your home page? They get buried! Of course, there are many ways to revive them like republishing or making a few featured articles but the easiest way to still make some noise with them is to simply do some deep linking.
First, let’s define the term:
Deep link: a URL that points to a specific page that houses particular information.
They are called deep links because they allow users to skip past the home page and head straight to the desired location (deeper in the site). Basically, any URL that points to a landing page and not the home page could be called a deep link.
Deep linking is not only easy, but also important
Go look around other blogs and you’ll actually find that many are not deep linking. My hunch is that bloggers don’t realize the value in it!
All you have to do is link back to previous articles whenever they are relevant. Surely you write posts about like topics all the time. There’s no reason not to provide additional value. For example, when you provide a deep link, you should consider the anchor text that you are going to use. The “consider the anchor text” link is a deep link to another related post on this site.
You’ll find relevant deep links in many of my previous posts. It gives readers a convenient way to access useful information without having to hunt for it. From a SEO standpoint, you’ll also benefit since deep linking ties related content together.
Tips for deep linking
Now that you understand what deep links are and how they provide value to both you and the reader, let’s run down a few tips.
- Only deep link when relevant. If the deep link has absolutely nothing to do with what you’re writing about, then you’re adding spam to your own blog.
- Use keywords for your anchor text that describes the info in the deep link. Do not use “click here”.
- If many of your articles are not related, then write a summary of your posts. For example, you could release a “last month’s top articles” post that has deep links to your most popular posts.
- If you haven’t used deep linking before, skip a day of writing and use that time to review and add deep links to previous posts.

I love my related posts plugin!
I have used deep linking to bring readers from my blog post to landing pages on my website but had not thought about deep linking to previous post with relevant content that still contain those deep links to the landing pages on the web site. Thanks Gabe.
It’s up to you whether or not you’re going to go back and make changes but moving forward, you should do your best to tie everything that is relevant together.
For you specifically, since you have many products that are in the same family, it’s important for you to start deep linking your posts asap.
Two tips if I may..
1. really try to remember to deeplink back posts as your writing the current one. As gabe eluded too, it is very time consuming to go back 100 posts or so. This also leaves time for tip @2, which even fewer people think of…
2. Every so often, every 20 posts or so, go back over some and link to the newer posts now relevant…..reverse deep linking I guess you could say
.

Welcome Dennis! Thanks for the input. You are absolutely right that folks should go to older posts and link to newer related posts.
One example is when I wrote a three-part series on brand identity two weeks ago. As I wrote the newer pieces, the older ones were updated with the new deep links. This could occur on a greater scale as well.
i am showing related posts in my blog posts by this the readers can see the old posts which are similar to the new posts.
i was implementing it in my blog and it helps me to reduce the bounce rate as harsh said the plugin insight is very good to pull out the older archives..

Very useful advice, Gabe. Deep linking from within the body of the post is given more weight in terms of SEO? I mean there are Related Posts, Similar Posts, and Popular Posts at the end of the post and in the sidebar, too. They’re not the same? I’ve used this every now and then, but not consistently. Perhaps because it takes time to hunt down relevant posts to match with the current one. What if we have an excel sheet of past posts grouped by categories. That’s very easy to scan and makes tying up relevant posts together.

Regardless of whether it benefits SEO or not, deep linking within the body of your articles helps your readers. It does take a few moments but it’s totally worth it if it gives them a bit of convenience.
A much greater scale indeed! What i’ve always found interesting is, I’ve read hundreds of tip posts regarding deep linking, and some from “big names”…I can’t recall one that mentioned the reverse.

Descriptive anchor text, number of links, which posts to tie them to…so many ways to have total control over deep links!
I’m new blogging, and I think that practice the deep linking will help me to no loss those post that can b evaluable for my visitors. I need to practice the deep link in all my articles that are in my blogs, using anchor text.
Unfortunately we don’t know exactly what our visitors are looking for in our blogs, but give them a fast and easy access to our contents using deep linking can do that our visitors become in currents and loyal readers of our blog.
One great thing about deep linking is that we have total control when we want to refer to our old articles. Even without doing keyword research, using what you think would be good anchor text would do wonders for any blog.
This is a great way to optimize your site for the search engines. Those pages will now rank better for the keywords you are targeting.
