Today’s well-written article about Google Panda is provided by Mitch O’Conner.

Back in February of 2011, Google unleashed a sweeping change to their search results ranking algorithm known as Panda, all in hopes of downranking “junk” and “copy-pasted” websites while boosting the visibility of better, more useable and unique sites.

Big surprise: it didn’t work perfectly. Although the algorithm changes indeed altered search results (in some cases for the better), the search giant was met with a backlash from many site owners accusing it of everything from poor quality control to putting its own corporate interests over those of the websites they help internet users find.

If you run a website or blog, there’s no getting around Google Panda. Instead, you’ll need to adapt and adjust, which in many cases will mean improving the overall quality of your site. Here are seven ways to do exactly that:

1. Create More Content, and Don’t Worry About Length

If you read too heavily into SEO guides (many of which are outdated by Panda, by the way), you may think that every single page on your site should contain no more than 300 to 500 words of content. Although there’s certainly a case to be made for short, punchy, to-the-point posts, the reality is that Panda calls for the best possible user experience, which in turn calls for content that’s only as long as it needs to be. You might have one page that makes its point in 200 words, while another may exceed 1,000.

Of course, there are some common sense limits to this. If a single page of your site exceeds, say, 2,000 words of content, you may want to think about how it could be restructured or broken into two or three separate pages that obviously deserve dedicated areas of their own. The old advice about breaking up lengthier posts with plenty of pictures, lists (when applicable and needed) and subheadings still applies, too.

2. Make Your Content Valuable and Non-Redundant

If you’ve had some sub-par content sitting and rotting away on the outskirts of your site, now might be a great time to clean it up. Although this type of content may have been seen as a neutral factor in the eyes of Google pre-Panda, especially if the rest of your site was high quality, it’s now viewed as a serious detriment that could drag down the rest of your site along with it. Anything that even remotely resembles spam will fall into this category.

Here are a few tips that go beyond the basic advice of writing for value:

Update pages whose only purpose is to link to other pages. Roll them into other pages that have content, or write some new valuable content for them.

Place plenty of original content above the fold, in the area immediately visible upon landing on the page.

Don’t plaster every page with ads. Having some ads is still fine, of course, but they shouldn’t take up more real estate than your actual content.

Never use auto-generated content. This simply won’t fly anymore with Google’s new algorithms.

3. Aim for a Natural Link Profile

Let’s say the purpose of your site is to discuss wireless internet services. You might link to a bunch of broadband providers, and possibly some mainstream media articles regarding the same topic. What you probably wouldn’t do, however, is link directly to competing sites trying to fill the same niche. In a post-Panda online environment, this is a mistake.

Panda is all about delivering the best possible experience to the user. Your site can do that by linking to other sites solely based on the value and relevancy of their content, regardless of whether they’re competing for your traffic. Your readers will appreciate it, and hence, Google will too.

4. Build Your Empire by Creating More Assets

When Google looks at your “brand,” they want to see more than just a single website that looks like a buoy in an ocean. Modern internet users want more than just pages with pictures. By creating more assets for your site, such as email lists, interactive forums and Facebook pages, you build a community around your brand. In a post-Panda environment, these are the types of sites that Google will prioritize in search results.

Get creative: is there some aspect of your site, or facet of your content, that could be better conveyed with an ongoing, regularly updated video series instead of just text? Seize the opportunity to use increasingly affordable multimedia to beef up your site/brand.

5. Select More Natural Keywords

Outdated SEO advice went something like this: pick one or two keyword phrases most closely related to the topic you’re covering in a post, hammer them into the content as heavily as possible, and make them even more obvious by bolding them and putting them in every subheading as well. Google’s new algorithms see right through this, and treat it as nothing short of a devious tactic.

Of course, you still need to include the keywords you’re trying to promote, but the key is to let that happen naturally. Write about the topic in a thorough and insightful way, and you’ll probably notice upon proofreading that you automatically included several variations of the keyword phrase without even really trying. It’s less work for you, and Google actually appreciates the efforts by ranking you higher.

6. Pay Attention to Navigation

No amount of excellent content will be worth anything if your users can’t find their away around your site. This one’s rather basic: keep menus consistent and logically arranged, use internal linking whenever appropriate, and don’t bury anything on your site.

7. Skip the Short-Cuts

Lots of site developers and SEOs are claiming that they circumvented the downranking effects of Panda through what basically amounts to a tricky short-cut: moving pages and sub-domains from a “pandalized” domain to a new one, and suddenly recovering the search rank and traffic they experienced before Panda even happened. Sounds like they just beat the system, right?

In reality, these types of short-cuts may work for a few days, at which point Google’s search-bots will finish analyzing your “new” pages only to penalize them yet again. The only real way to get your ranking back post-Panda is to shape up your content, cut the duplicate copy and give your users a thoroughly better and more valuable experience.

Today’s post about mobile and search is from Mark Thompson from Businesswebhostingplans.com.

Although the internet and web applications have advanced at breakneck speed, one of the areas that seems stuck in the 90’s and early 00’s are search engines. Although many search engines have done a good job of getting us the information we want quickly and efficiently, not much has changed in terms of the big picture. We are still finding ourselves typing in a few keywords to a box and hoping to get the right web page within the first 3 or 4 results. With the advent of mobile search this dynamic is slowly changing with search engines designed for mobile users on the go.

If you’re in the cohort of people surfing the web more and more on your mobile device the experience you have using a search engine probably isn’t the best from your tiny screen. Search queries originating from mobile devices are still a small proportion of overall searches but they are the fastest growing group overall. Currently, around 15% of Google searches come from a mobile phone and the rate is at 20% for Yahoo. Bing and Windows Mobile have been in the search game for less time so they have actually been able to focus more of their growth strategy on mobile search. The strategy behind the new Windows Mobile smartphones is to integrate Bing across many applications and leapfrog the competition.

One way that mobile search is taking advantage of powerful new smartphones is though voice search. On almost all smartphones you can now simply speak your search query and the result list will load when your voice is converted to text.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the growth in mobile search is that around a fifth of all mobile searchers are looking to make a purchase of some type. These may be people who are in a physical store or who are doing shopping research online before heading out. Yet another group of people (who must be a large percentage of the total) want to make a purchase with their phone – and quickly.

The fact that most retailers still have not optimized their websites for the mobile shopper is resulting in lost sales every day. A key for website owners to provide a good experience for mobile visitors is to invest in a windows hosting plan . Search engines are quick to this fact and have developed slick mobile interfaces to do the shopping for you. For example, the Deals app from Bing produced by Windows Mobile makes it easy to search for both physical goods like books and DVDs as well as getting a good deal on a restaurant via direct access to Groupon deals.

If you are a website owner, don’t be relegated to the desktop website visitor only. Be sure your site is optimized for mobile search and you’ll see instant growth in visits and interactivity.

Patrick Smith from WebHostingSecretRevealed.com offers up some hosting advice today.

The second most important thing to a website is the web hosting. It is not as easy as it

sounds, there are always people offering you the “best deal”. Cheap web hosting is a thing to always admire if it’s reliable. If your website is just starting off, then the best, and cheapest option for you is shared web hosting. Shared web hosting is a web server hosting multiple websites; this is why they are much cheaper compared to a dedicated server. Most websites won’t need a dedicated server unless they have crazy traffic; possibly having over two thousand unique visitors daily is when you can consider a change. Because of server hardware and software becoming so strong, it is possible to host multiple high traffic sites, while still keeping the server stable.

Cheap web hosting shouldn’t be hard to find, but it’s all about if the service has good reputation, and a good server to back it up. Another good thing about choosing cheap web hosting is the managing. Hosting a single site, on a costly dedicated server can be very frustrating if you don’t know what you are doing. Choosing shared web hosting means that the server your sites are hosted on are monitored by IT professionals most of the time, to help keep your site up. Another good reason for choosing shared web hosting is the tools that companies provide. Most shared hosting companies provide auto installers that make website creating a snap.

The most famous panel for cheap web hosting is cPanel. CPanel provides a very user-friendly interface that makes web hosting super easy. CPanel also offers a lot of security features, and is always recommend for any type of site whether it’s running on cheap web hosting, or a very expensive dedicated server. Most shared web servers use Linux as their choice of operating system. They use Linux because it’s the most secure option available, with very little holes so it can keep your files safe. Although Linux is hard to use at first, you won’t have to worry about that if you are on shared web hosting. Shared web servers generally provide cPanel, or any other panel of choice. So you can have the security of Linux, without all the hassles of using console to do all your work.

Overall, shared web hosting is a cheap and reliable solution whether you’re hosting a mature or new site.

We have seen Apple take big strides in the consumer market in recent years. We have seen the release of Chromebooks, and the big impact they are having in the USA, and particularly with schools. Apple is expensive and people will still pay. Chromebooks are very cost effective, especially considering they come with a monthly payment deal, which is only 20 dollars per month. We still don’t know how much it will cost to install Windows 8. The majority of business users use Windows, but students are a completely different market. Here are some of the issues of concern with the relatively slow release of Windows 8.

Higher Education. Those getting prepared to work in marketing or business are studying related business courses and marketing courses. Many of them are choosing Apple (especially because of the boom with iPad popularity) and the great value the Chromebook brings – despite many predictions the Chromebook would not sell well, it has been selling on Amazon extremely well. Summing up, Apple and Chrome have penetrated the student market for very different reasons.

Business Market. Windows and the new Windows 8 are probably going to dominate the business market as they have done since the launch of Windows 95. We all know the Windows operating system has not been without problems. Vista was the operating system that destroyed Windows’ reputation. Windows 7 was a recovery for that situation. Windows 8 is making a lot of promises to users and the business market. This time they just have to deliver.

Cost. Apple just released the Lion OSX update at 30 dollars. The Chromebook is only 20 dollars a month for students. If we think about the period of time most students will study in higher education for, this will mean a deeper penetration for those two operating systems by the time the current students leave their education and move on to business. When is Microsoft going to release the price?

Timing. The Windows 8 download will not be ready for about another year. That is another year of penetration into the student market for Apple and Chrome. There will be many of those students who will not go on to work with others, and they will start businesses of their own. Going it alone is the new way forward. The best students are already ahead of the curve, and working for someone else will never be an option.

For the majority of students in countries like the USA, Canada and Australia, building their own start-up is the best option for employment. No one wants to wait around to get employed at a low salary, and wait around for promotions. Some of the newest and fastest growing companies in the world today came from students. Look at Google and Facebook – they are perfect examples.

If we take sheen out of blogging, the bare facts will start hurting us so badly that we need to find a way to make it appear glamour job. But reality is hard to overlook and the reality is that blogging is not a career option at least. You can take it as a hobby but with caution because it can leave out sooner than you can expect. It requires a passion for writing and a keen desire to post something unique and exciting. I have personally seen people taking up blogging as a profession and then given up within the next two months. Now, if you do not wish to join this bandwagon, you need to aware of the flipsides of blogging if you want to kick start your career in this domain:

Blogging isn’t that Easy – Contrary to popular perception, blogging is anything but easy job. It requires a certain degree of devotion, dedication and a keen desire to present things that people in general will find truly interesting and engaging. It takes some doing to choose the topic, brainstorm to get the concept into tangible words, find the proper images and finally get it posted in the blog. And then it is not the end of the job. You need to work hard to promote in different social media websites. Now, initial enthusiasm is likely to die down as soon as you see that all your going down the drains as the Analytics is not showing any positive signs. So, you need to be mentally prepare that blogging is going to make you earn thousands of dollars each month. It will take months, sometimes more than six moths to see your blog showing some signs of improvements.

It is not business all the time: Lets face is that on one can survive solely on blogging. You can take it a side business, earn some good bucks by selling some adds in the blog or adding Google Adsense but none of them dilute the importance of having a day job. You can see things this – blog is the best tool to promote your business but do not take it as the business itself. Blogging is a means to boost your business and not the other way round.

Blogging isn’t all about you: blogging may sound personal but if you wish to build up a good rapport with some people who regularly visit your website and read your posts, you should not turn your blog into a personal journal. Instead of using ‘I’ and ‘me’ all the time, you need to use ‘you’ and sometimes ‘them’ to reflect the concerns of visitors and to make them feel that you care for them. People like to read interesting articles, tips, great images and other facts that make them feel good or at least shock them but if your blog is filled with droll of personal information, it will soon kiss the dust.

Blog is about interaction: Staying aloof from your readers and treating them as inferiors is certainly not the way forward by any standard. You have seen people commenting on your blog but have ever thought of replying their queries probably not. This is probably the biggest mistake a blogger can commit in his career. However, not all comments are important. There are some who comments only to get a linkback their website whereas some people comments only to vent their feeling. Special attention should be given to latter.

Practice doesn’t help always: Practice makes a man perfect. Sounds true but the fact is that it cannot be applied everywhere. There are some exceptions and you have to accept. We cannot become Shakespeare no matter how hard we may try. Every man has his limitation and potentials. We need to find out our potentials as a blogger before we go on blogging like anything else. Rather than writing regularly, you need to take a break and try to perfect your writing style, add some unique elements in them to make it look polish if you are to survive in this cut throat competitive environment.

Daniel Tew provides us with an Adobe update…

Announced on the 20th of September by Adobe Systems, Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 are going to help developers create more engaging applications for all major platforms and devices. Mac, Windows, Apple iOS, BlackBerry OS, and Android users, will all be able, thanks to Adobe’s upcoming releases, to use immersive applications that look better and are more fun to use than ever before. Online gamers in particular, whether they use devices or computers, will rejoice at the arrival of Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 because Adobe promises ‘console-quality 2D and 3D games delivered over the Internet’.

Better Apps

The new range of Adobe software supports the best open-source libraries, which allow app developers to fully utilize hardware capabilities formerly inaccessible. They will be able to create apps with full support for dual screens, light sensors, vibration control, and the increasingly popular NFC. Because of the new AIR native extensions, apps using AIR 3 will be able to be integrated more smoothly in other software, and especially in software used mostly by business. Finally, developers will be able to play with native code, Flash, and HTML5, mixing them all according to their need, to create more flexible apps for both computers and mobile devices.

New Generation of 2D and 3D Games

Adobe Flash Player 11 has an impressive 1,000 faster rendering performance than Flash Player 10 and AIR 2, which allows game developers to render appealing graphical environments at 60fps. All gamers will benefit from this improvement, whether they use Mac, Windows, Android, Apple iOS, or BlackBerry OS. The new API’s in Flash Player 11 help developers not only to create more engaging games for all platforms, but also to develop faster high-quality games, comparable to those available on consoles.

For example, the developers of Delta Strike, a popular online game, have been able to create a full 3D stable version of the game in about 20 days. Flash Player 11 also makes things easier for gamers. Casual online gamers will be able to play their favorite 3D games without having to download any other plug-ins, besides of course the Flash 11 plug-in for their web browser. Adobe Flash Player 11 sounds like great news indeed for both developers and gamers, and by the looks of it it’s likely going to make online 3D games more dynamic than ever.

HD Videos with Protected Content

Adobe Flash Access 3 promises more protection for video content, regardless of the platform to which the videos are distributed. The video quality supported by Flash Player 11 is higher as well, so that full frame rate videos using H.264 decoding will display on the iPhone and the iPad flawlessly. Finally, creators and distributors of HD videos through online televisions will be able to deliver excellent quality videos with richer sound, because Flash Player 11 now supports 7.1 surround sound.

An increasing number of mobile devices are now supporting apps based on Flash, with the latest numbers showing than about 215 smart phones and tablets will fully support Flash by the end of the year. Flash Player 11 and Adobe AIR 3 will be officially released in early October.

Today’s article is brought to you by Sachin from webprofits.

The market for tablets has changed dramatically over the past two years. What was once a race between a few contenders, held quietly behind the media attention of computers, is now a widely publicised and critical fight for dominance with varied challengers. The market was originally dominated, as most of the IT market was, by Windows. This all changed in 2010 when Apple revolutionised the way we think about tablets.

There are now numerous tablets available with three major operating systems: Windows 8 (to be released in 2012), iOS, and Android. This article will consider the future of tablets and which OS is best.

Apple iOS

Apple made radical changes to the world of tablets through the introduction of the iPhone and the iPad. The way that we now enjoy media is largely different than it was before the introduction of these devices. The software behind these tablets is iOS and whilst it is limiting, it is everywhere. iOS has the drawback that it ties users into iTunes. These devices are incompatible with Flash and any media purchase made through Apple is limited to use in iTunes only. The iPad is versatile and offers huge variety through the App store but whilst this opens opportunities it is very limited in some senses and allows you to do only what Apple allows you to do.

Microsoft Windows 8

Windows 7 offered a fairly easy to access interface but Microsoft has started the next stage of the tablet renaissance through the announcement of their latest OS due for release in 2012. Windows is moving toward a single platform which works on all devices. The new OS runs on an ARM processor and can thus be installed on practically every smartphone and tablet device. The best part of this is that it runs exactly the same on a laptop, desktop, or a tablet. Whilst Apple have opted for two very distinct operating systems for tablets and laptops, Windows have thrown caution to the wind with a move to toward complete mobility. The new interface is very user friendly and access to cloud computing enables Microsoft to change the way we access information once again. A Windows 8 download could soon enable seamless connectivity between computers, clouds and tablets, in a way that Apple’s separate operating systems cannot replicate.

Google Android

Android offers a high quality interface, which is good but not yet perfect. It is a solid alternative to the more expensive iPad for many customers and their grasp on the smartphone industry is increasing.
