Getting a lot of requests for guest articles lately. Here’s another one!
All too often, a person will develop a stellar blog idea and even write quality posts, but will fail to consider the appearance of their blog and posts. Just a simple stroll through the depths of the internet will turn up plenty of well written and interesting articles that are displayed in an extremely unappealing way. Many bloggers seem to underestimate the importance of appearance when it comes to both their blogs and their blog posts. An internet audience is an interesting and complicated entity to understand and please. Because of the general nature of the internet, blogs must be both visually appealing and intellectually stimulating to be successful. So, posting amazing articles without displaying them in an interesting and attractive way is rarely going to work. Use these Three visual tips to develop a successful and profitable blog.
Make It Easy To Read
Blog post are all about being easy to read. Huge blocks of text are extremely difficult to read when displayed on a computer screen. While there may be top-notch content drowning in the pool of letters on the screen, no internet reader is going to stick around to find it. Keep things simple and clear. Always keep in mind the way in which people use the internet. People scan and skip around when they read through posts on the web. By keeping this in mind, you can better snag a reader’s attention and create something they will actually read. Use subheadings, bullets, breaks, bolding, anything that will help to divide up the page for the reader’s eyes and make it easier for them to skim through. This may sound somewhat counter intuitive. You are posting things to your blog because you want readers to actually read your posts. By breaking things up and making it easy to scan, you encourage readers to first take a glance at your material and then be wooed by your outstanding writing and topic.
Keep Things Short and Concise
Get to your point quickly. The internet is all about speed and efficiency. Because of this, the internet audience has become spoiled by their need for instant gratification. Readers what to know what they are getting into when they see a post by reading your exciting, alluring, and somewhat informative title. Moreover, once they start to read a post, they want to get to the “juicy part” quickly. As a general rule blog posts should be around 300 to 700 words long, depending on the nature of the topic and the blog’s overall niche. Break up your posts into several smaller paragraphs to avoid huge blocks of text. By keeping things short and to the point, you are more likely to maintain your audience and keep them coming back for more.
Mix It Up Some
Another important aspect of blog appearance is visual interest. No visitor is going to be attracted by a blog that is boring to look at. If your blog is written in plain text with no color, images, or multimedia, it is going to be difficult for you to maintain (or even gain) an audience. Try to include images in your posts. Throw in some video or multimedia posts. Pick intelligent and appealing web themes. Keep in mind, however, that designing (or decorating) a blog can be a tricky task. Be careful not to make your webpage look clutter and disorganized. The key to attractive web design for a blog is clear and simple elegance.
Constructing a blog that is both engaging to read and engaging to look at can be a difficult task. But, as many of us know, appearance is essential to gaining readers and readers are essential to making a blog profitable.

Nice write up… But keeping things short ! Does it really gonna helo ? Expert says to emphasize on pillar article which is about more then 500 words
Pillar articles are nice. The truth is, I haven’t written a pillar article in over a year. If I had the time, I would produce more.
However, I think most people would prefer short hits rather than lengthy articles. Even when I was writing “pillars”, I would break them up into multiple pieces that are easy to digest.
Rather than writing pillar articles, I have found that it works better to take the content and break it up into 3 or 4 posts in a series and then clearly link them together so people that are interested in all of it will click through. This will help to increase your time on site and number of pages per visit. I find that these days, readers won’t read more than a few paragraphs and then skim unless it is something they are really wanting to know and your article is filled with specific detail.

I agree with these points! Appearance does matter a lot..its like the first impression that a reader gets and it kind of leaves a lasting mark on the visitor. Avoiding huge blocks of text is one more thing that is very important to retain the interest of a reader.

Most of the readers get to read the title of the post, and few of them get to read the entire post. So, make your title and short description as interesting as possible – this is my first rule.
Whilst I totally agree with your sentiments on this, a little bit of reverse thinking may pay dividends.
In general, having content that is well presented, is easy to read and does not appear confusing is an excellent idea 99% of the time.
However, a few (emphasis on “a few”) websites have gained spectacular results by adopting the complete reverse.
Lings cars (google it) has been voted one of the worst UK websites. One look at it and you will realise just why. However, this notoriety, and the owner’s eccentric approach to marketing, has raised her profile and has been nothing but good for business.
I think it was President Reagan, amongst others, who said that there was “no such thing as bad publicity”. And, Oscar Wilde said: “The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.”
So, sometimes, having an absolutely awful website can prove beneficial. But, as they often say: “Don’t try this at home!”
Yeah, a blog should be easy to follow, full of content, and short enough to keep the interest of a 5yr old. Videos, pictures, and links enhance the “sparkle” of a blog 100%. Some folks believe that the dialogue in a blog should be uniform and clean of any personality when reporting news, or facts. However, you don’t hear much on how a Dialect or “personality” in a personal blog can be captivating. Often times, this can really make your readers feel connected, and comfortable with you. Thank you for a great post

Hi, Alvina:
Let me add that the tricks needed to make a blog profitable vary by the type of blog. This is one point many new to the business do not realize. There are many different types of blogs – affiliate, personal, business, Adsense, company, net marketing, etc.
Each one has its own set of guidelines and best practices when it comes to monetization. What might work really well on one type, might completely bomb on another.
This is something that needs to be talked about more in net marketing circles, because newbies are falling through the cracks on this topic.
Cheers!

I hate it when blogs are written as if they are talking to an alien… simplicity is beautiful..simplicity makes sense..unless your website is all about engineering and all these kinda thing, why not just use simple terms? If you don’t want it simple, so why choose a niche about gardening or fashion?
