How is it that some bloggers with incredible, breakthrough knowledge with impressive, creative writing prowess can’t get traffic let alone make any money? Meanwhile, other bloggers with much less useful information with only so-so writing can gain tar-like stickiness and earn a decent blogging income?
If you ask every successful band what they did when they first started, many of them will tell you that they did whatever they could to make as much noise as possible!
Eventually, they build a following and really make it big by attracting the right people, whether they be groupies, casual followers, agents, managers, or record companies.
For the most part, that means they never missed an opportunity to:
- Play their best in front of an audience, no matter how small
- Distribute information (via flyers, emails, etc) to promote their gigs
- Meet as many people as possible
- Release new material regularly
So what does that mean to you? I’m sure you’ve figured out that the parallels are obvious. As a blogger, here’s how you should “make noise”:
- Produce your best content, no matter what your traffic is
- Use social bookmarks, write guest posts, and visit other blogs (among other things) to promote your articles
- Connect with as many bloggers and customers as possible
- Write new content consistently
The early days may be rough but the bands that are persistent about those activities are usually the ones who become headliners one day. That’s why so many bands never make it out of a garage.
The same pretty much goes for blogging.

“Make as much noise as possible.”
Very good analogy with blogging. Advice I am taking to heart.

Yeah, great advice. I only started in late October and now have so much traffic I can barely keep my site up on shared hosting. lol
All I did was make some noise! I posted everywhere I could without being spammy about it, asked my members to spread the word, worked on SEO and submitted to every search engine I could.
Seemed to work, now I just wish it would slow down a bit so I can catch up.

Blogging really isn’t that hard. There’s a lot of work involved and two of the big pieces are creating great stuff and getting the word out — tasks that bloggers and musicians both need to do regularly.
Agree buddy!

Blogging isn’t hard at all but it seems like many people can’t do it very long.
I don’t know I have the ability to make myself a rockstar blogger or not but in very short(only 3+month) of period what I gain with my new blog satisfied me and push me to do what I was doing.

Rockstars also differentiate themselves from the other rockstars … so to be noticed you really have to be different, maybe even outrageously so or be super talented – preferably both

True, there’s a branding element involved. That’s why two artists can sing the same exact song but one may be labeled country while the other filed under the pop genre.
Great analogy Gabe this is so true. The way I see it is if your passionate about anything like rock stars to there music and you never give up, always do your best., eventually you will be heard and you will be successful.
Gabe, This makes a lot of sense. I am not sure I have what it takes, I am still the new guy on the blog, but giving it a try, and having a lot of fun with it. I think being passionate about something and putting your heart and soul into it will eventually pay off. Like Rob said. That being said being successful isn’t always about money, but being happy and enjoying life.
As some of my regulars already know, I don’t focus on money. I put all my attention on writing and promoting. Those are my success indicators.
The money comes naturally when I achieve what I set out to do.
With making loads of noise as you have mentioned above, I would also say that NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER. Keep trying and you will have a break through one day. It’s bound to come and you just have to be there to grab that opportunity.

I agree. Never give up but change strategies and tactics while monitoring your success.
I thought of one other thing I would love to hear some info on. Content theft. It may not be a big issue for many blogs, but every month I discover other blogs/sites that are word for word stealing our entire posts and claiming them as their own. It would be great to know some tips to report these people and help prevent this, if anything even exists.
Thanks!
.-= Jake´s last blog ..Early Tuesday Update! =-.
Content theft, aka scraping, is absolutely annoying. There are really two parts to it: 1. preventing it and 2. stopping the offender.
I actually don’t worry too much about preventing but one thing that would help you is to add deep links to your articles. Usually, scrappers grab the entire article, including the links. When that happens, you’ll get the benefit of backlinks to your site.
When it comes to stopping the thief, you can send them a legal response but what I found effective is contacting the offender’s host. Send them your supporting evidence and the site should be shut down within days.
Just be sure your noise is high quality and not just deafening.

I agree blogging is not hard…I’ve been told I’m doing everything wrong with my blog but am managing to scrape out a full time income on just 4 posts a month. I would say persevere and take the criticism of others with a grain of salt…

You’re right about criticism. Being able to determine which constructive criticism to take action on is also very key.
Making as much noise as possible and becoming a Rockstar blogger – that’s an awesome analogy. You are a Rockstar blogger, Gabe!

Yes this is bang-on.
I’ve found the key to this is finding the topics you are really passionate about, and then focusing on absolute quality when you produce content.
The passion comes from your initial interest in an area, which in term, going back far enough, will, as with most good things, stem from desire.
