Several weeks ago, I asked you a tough question: Are you in the top 10% of bloggers who can survive six months?
However, one question I didn’t ask was whether you’re even going to make it through the three month milestone! Based on what I’ve seen just from my blogging peers, the drop-off is huge. I’m guessing many bloggers chose to burnout completely. I’ve also had three emails from fellow bloggers this week who actually used the term burnout when describing their motivation levels.

You are not alone
We’ve all been there. Blogging is a lot of work for very little money in the beginning. Dave Doolin from Website-In-A-Weekend likes to use a hockey stick analogy. You’ll earn almost nothing early on and then something happens and *boom*, suddenly there’s a sharp increase to your earnings.
Free Blog Help dot Com is just a tad over 90 days old. Like many of you, I’m a one-man show. I don’t have all the features I want nor do I have all the promotion I need. What I do have is enough fuel to keep going. What helps me that my success in previous blogs lets me know what to expect.
It’s not uncommon to start your blog site with an energized burst. You may even get additional boosts after you’ve selected a theme or returned from a conference. But can you keep your spirits up on a day to day basis?
Preventing burnout
The term burnout comes from when something like a jet engine stops burning due to a lack of fuel. Here’s some advice for keeping fuel in your tank.
Pace yourself
Sure, being ambitious is a good thing but just make sure you don’t go overboard. Biting off more than you can chew is very common in the first few months. Remember that the road to blogging success is a marathon and sprinting early on will impede your progress later.
Create a weekly schedule
It’s so easy to create a schedule yet many bloggers don’t have one. Plan how many posts you’re making a week. Then figure out which days you’re working on research, promotion, and plugins/technical updates. When you’re bored with your routine, switch things up a bit.
Take a break during the day
Don’t sit at your machine and just blog all day. Find another project to work on, watch a movie, or play a game, then come back to your blog station. I usually take 30-40 minutes to watch a TV show I missed. I promise you’ll be more productive after you recharge.
Find a blog buddy
There are many bloggers in your niche with similar maturity. All you have to do is go to a top dog blog in your niche and look at comments posters. Just like an exercise partner, a blog buddy can motivate you on days when you’re not feeling as energetic. At the same time, the entire process can be a lot more fun when you’re partnering and learning alongside someone.
Feeling burned out from time to time is perfectly normal. The proof is the number of “dead” blogs out there (it really is over 90%). The challenge is surviving and thriving while others fall to the wayside. I’m hoping that with these tips, you’re choice is to refuel.

Nice shot in the arm, Gabe. I think the other thing is to constantly remember WHY you write, and it can’t just be to have an audience. I write because I sincerely want to help people that feel lost with internet marketing. If I remember that, I get less frustrated by a wee (but very supportive) audience.
And the blogging buddy SO helps.
Great point! Remembering why you’re blogging in the first place is a great way to keep that motor running.
Just approaching the 90 day mark to! And the 2 week mark on my blog move.
Yes a burnout can be a real pain, since it can lead to a writers block.
Thanks for the tips, will use them.

Everyone suffers from writer’s block from time to time. With time and experience, you’ll be able to crank out your articles at a much faster rate, making up for any time lost when your brain is stuck in the mud.
These are great tips, all of which I currently use. I intentionally do not post everyday for fear that I will get burned out or simply not have anything to talk about but feel forces to post something anyway. What fun would that be and we all need to keep in mind that blogging should be fun or we may as well either get a job or stay at our job and forget about the dream of a Dot Com Lifestyles.
Much of my time is spent reading and commenting on other blogs and looking for new friends.
Hi Friend!

Posting schedule is up to each individual. Some blogs are extremely successful with just 2-3 per week, which I think should be the minimum.
Google likes frequent updates so if you’re goal is to increase organic search rankings, it definitely wouldn’t hurt to post once a day.
Regardless, my advice to people who don’t have a schedule, make one that works for you and your goals and stick with it for a while.
Having a schedule makes alot of sense. We should be treating our blogs like real jobs with real bosses. Lots of ppl just don’t have the discipline.
Blogging is sexy! Now why the hell would any blogger burnout? That’s just ridiculous! Great read btw.
Currently I’m averaging about 4 articles every 3 days, which lets me gradually get ahead of the power curve… and gives me slack when I decide I’ve had enough for a while.
I typically have 3-4 days scheduled at any given time.
I’m going to make myself take some time off though, soon.

That’s a great post, I’m coming up to the 90 day mark but I’ve been so busy trying to get traffic, writing something to post, commenting on other blogs, looking for new opportunities to write about, looking for new and better widgets and more that I didn’t even notice lol But I have felt like giving up many times, but I kept going big thanks to my blogger buddy. It is very important to get a blogger friend that can give you a boost when you are just about out of gas. Great post, will bookmark and reread next time the road looks to ruff to keep going.

Dave, you deserve a short break. Let me know if you want another guest post to fill the gap.
You have seven posts this week! Anyway, AdSense is only part of the revenue equation. There are other streams that you could try.
If you haven’t made up your decision yet, have you at least thought about just changing your blog schedule to a lighter load?
Thanks for sharing your experience with your blogging buddy with us. You’re right, there’s always so much to do. One way to look at it is that building a blog empire is a learning experience. Enjoy the journey!

Glad to see that you’re still happily chugging away. I think burnout starts 60-90 days, which is extremely quick compared to almost anything else in life. Then around 120-180 days, a large majority of bloggers completely abandon their sites.
Once help from you. I just want to know how to put my pic just the way you have put yours.

It is really difficult to keep on the morale, I feel the gain in blogging is the slowest process in this universe
. But what you have written is to the point, it is extremely necessary to keep up the morale and be motivated, in that case only you can write what on the very first day of the blog you had planned. The excitement has to be lingered all the way, as after some days we only count returns and never care what all beautiful things we have created and people are getting benefited thru it. Therefore I always try to write or create something that keeps my vigor alive, and say…wow that is me who have made it work!!!
By the way, you write nice and well matured posts, so though they are big…I never wish to skip out a single point. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the wonderful feedback. You’re right about the excitement factor (thus my Why having a blog is like having a girlfriend article).
Once you make it through those big milestones and eventually reach one year, you have truly become a veteran. It’s more about accomplishment, not money. I believe if you focus on success, the money will come.
Sounds like it’s time to modify your plan. Maybe make shorter posts, or break them up into multiple parts so a single day’s post could be spread over two days. Then spend the other days doing something fun, like exploring new promotion possibilities.
Excellent advice Gabe.
Persistence. That is what you need more than anything. As you persist you’ll learn when to take breaks, when to work, to set up a schedule, and whatever else you should do to become successful. When the persistence test is passed the rewards will come.

Thanks for the tips Gabe. It’s actually a motivation just knowing your not alone. I find planning a scedule and blog topics in advance is a big help. Also I find that the more I research and write the more I learn about my niche which for me has been great for conversations when selling our products at local markets and shows.
Rob, totally with you. When you’re blogging, you’re forced into an expert role that requires research on your part. That’s a wonderful indirect benefit.

I so agree with taking 30-40 minutes out of your day to take a break. In fact, now I take an hour. If you’ve ever listened to Tony Robbins you’ll know how he talks about an ‘hour of power’ everyday. When I tried this, I became more productive during the day…it was quite amazing really. I had always said that I don’t have time to exercise or meditate or anything like that but once I did I found I had more time.
