Alright, we all know you must have your own domain to have a successful blog. If you’re not willing to commit under $100 per year for a domain and hosting, then most people won’t commit to you. That’s the bottom line.
Other than using a domain for an existing site, many people don’t realize there are benefits for parking a domain. By ‘parked domain’, I mean you bought a domain but you haven’t really done anything with it.
Reasons to park a new domain
A mature domain will give you a significant head start
Do you have ideas for a new blog or website but you’re not ready to start working on it? Well buy your domain today and just let it sit! I know, you’re thinking if someone snags the one you want, there are other alternative domain names you’re willing to take. Fair enough but that’s not the reason why you need to buy the domain now.
A major part of the Google algorithm includes the age of the site. The longer it’s been existence (in Google’s eyes, containing an index that search engines can find), the better. That means all the SEO advantages, PageRank and other rankings all start from day one.
So even if you’re not planning on really ramping up your site for another 2-3 years, that’s perfectly fine. If you buy your domain today, by the time you’re ready to use it, you just gave yourself a big boost.
A domain with keywords in it can easily be sold
We already know that domain names are being snatched up very fast. Although there are many good ones available, the truly great ones are long gone. I’m sure when you registered for your domain, you saw a good number of domains for sale.
Let’s build from the previous point of having a mature site. There is a huge market for domain names, especially those that have aged a few years. Just check out GoDaddy auctions and you’ll start to see the potential. Domains are being sold every day for thousands of dollars. The ones the have been around will fetch even more. Why? Because when you transfer it, all those benefits of a mature domain goes along with it.
The ones with good keywords in it will typically sell for the most. For instance, freebloghelp.com has decent keywords since people actually search on that phrase. Do a little research and buy a domain with two or three keywords in it. When you put it up for sale, rest assured that the longer it sits, the more attractive it will be.
A parked domain can earn you income
Regardless of whether you decide to keep the mature domain for yourself or sell it to someone else, you can actually earn income while it’s idle. One way is simply using Google AdSense for Domains. This was designed specifically to display ads for parked domains. So, you might as well put some ads on there in case anyone swings by rather than showing a passe construction page or displaying an error message.
If you’ve used keywords in the domain name, you’ve greatly increased your chances of someone landing on your page. This is one way to have the domain name literally pay for itself!
Take advantage of the domain sale
So if you’re ready to buy a domain, click through my GoDaddy domain sale link, you can grab your .com domain for $7.49 per year! Sure it’s only a few dollars shy of their regular $10 price but every little bit helps, right?
Happy domain hunting!

Parking a domain definitely isn’t a huge money maker. As I mentioned in the article, just getting it to pay for itself is an accomplishment.
That said, it’s at least a good way to earn a few extra bucks while the domain is in a holding pattern.

Google doesn’t really heavly rank a domain on age but rather back links.
Bing on the other hand, the domain age out ranks domain links.

Since the algorithm changes regularly, even if we knew the exact amount of weight a domain’s age plays a factor, it could be different tomorrow.
Regardless, as you stated, two major contributors in any search engine’s eyes are backlinks and age. You have much more control over the former but the latter has to be done proactively.

Honestly, most people only think about domains when they’re using them and don’t realize the benefits of planning ahead. Hope this article at least gets the brain moving in that direction.
Domain parking is the technical term for what you do between buying your domain name and getting round to doing something with that domain. Domain Parking
I’m in the habit of buying domains and parking them…though some I’ve activated adsense, it’s not something to write home clickwise. I’m yet to find success in selling some of my parked domains…tried flippa numerous times and failed.
Muzi Mohale´s last blog ..Interview with Bishwajeet Mahato, CompTalks.com blogger
Thanks for the input. Parking domains with AdSense isn’t going to make anyone rich. Even good domains will barely earn enough for a happy meal each month.
Also, I have used flip sites in the past and sometimes you get a little more than expected and sometimes a little less. I’m not sure which ones you’ve tried to sell but if I buy a domain with the intention of selling it, I do a bit of keyword research on it.
Another idea is to buy domains that describe products with hopes that the companies that own those products want them. For example, Nexium is a drug in the US and the pill is purple. They bought purplepill.com to use (along with nexium-us.com) as their marketing site. Now, you couldn’t really buy nexium.com because the courts would rule against you and you’d have to hand it over but if you bought purplepill.com years ago, you’d be able to semi-retire.
Instead of parking a domain I prefer to redirect it in my active domain and I will prefer to use a maintenance mood plugin before going live. It’s only my personal preference. By the way nice points.

Hi Gabe,
Interesting post that makes sense but there is one thing which I’m not sure I understand correctly.
You wrote that even if you’re not ready to work on your site for which you have an idea that you should still buy the domain for it.
What I’m not clear on is how if you just buy a domain and sit on it it’s rank value can go up.
I would understand it if it’s actually being used with a site and content on it.
The rest is very understandable.

The value of a domain can go up as it ages. How long a domain has been in existence plays a significant part of search engines algorithms. It’s really that simple.

Btw, nice disclosure link, very unobtrusive. Do you put that in manually each post or have it right in the theme editor?
Dennis Edell´s last blog ..UPDATED – Pick My New Domain Names With A chance To Win $10!
For SEO purposes, it actually doesn’t matter what you do with the domain as long as it’s indexed. So at a minimum, I would put a simple page up or use AdSense for Domains. It should only take you a few minutes.
A simple page, such as…..what for instance?
Dennis Edell´s last blog ..UPDATED – Pick My New Domain Names With A chance To Win $10!
Just a home page with some keywords on it should be enough to get picked up by search engines.
Oh, and I plan on using different disclosure link verbiage if it makes sense so I manually type that sentence in there.
Different depending on the type of link used?

No, I mean different depending on what I’m writing about. For instance, this was an affiliate link. If I do a review post, the disclosure sentence that leads to the link might be different.
But the disclosure statement will be the same?

Not a bad idea. One could argue they could use .net as well.
Regardless, no matter what we’re told or what’s recommended, .com is still favored by many bloggers.
Actually it’s a horrible idea.
Both Google and Akismet (as well as many others I’m sure) are WELL aware that .info domains are a spammers dream due to the super low cost….they will not like you, not even a little.

Dennis Edell´s last blog ..The $10 Winner And More Good News…..
There are lots of reasons why people buy .info and not all of them are spammers. Excellent point that there may be a penalty since sometimes they are all lumped together though.
Still, I’d like to think that in most cases there really isn’t a right or wrong. Of course, there are preferences and some choices have advantages over others.
I’m sure there are reasons, but why put yourself through probable hassles just for a buck or two? The facts are out there…
Akismet has them practically on auto-spam when commenting with one, and Google has/is harsh as well more then sometimes…I’m pretty sure other would be too.

thanks for sharing .
Nice tip…
Just curious. Are you going to buy domains to replace your current site or for other purposes?
I’m afraid you may be confusing your readers in assuming purchasing a domain today provides healthy search engine optimization. Not so. If there are two identical domains, both bought five years ago, but only one has been actively dynamic and the other has only been parked, the parked domain will have a low page rank compared to the higher PR of the active domain, especially if there is back and forth linking, etc.

You’re absolutely right if you’re comparing an active domain vs. a parked domain.
I’m referring more to a new domain vs. an existing domain. The latter, regardless of how it’s used (as long as it’s indexed), will have an edge.

However, he danced around the question and never really answered it. In fact, he goes on to say not to worry about it as much as building quality links. Google actually tells people not to worry about lots of things, including PR.
Lastly, he only directly mentioned how long a domain is registered for, not how long it’s been in existence.

Personally, I’m a .com only guy. However, in certain instances, I also be .net or .org can work well. I would stay far away from .info, .biz, or any other types though.
